One question. Are you having your lessons via Zoom, Teams, Skype or whatever?
Online at mo but I normally go round there.
He lives with his missus who is furloughed and don’t see anyone (other students done by Skype as well) so I could go round there as me and my lot haven’t seen anyone either.
Cheers. Just good to hear that it can carry on and be there to keep pushing you forward. Plus I guess it’s something to look forward to every week.
Yeah I’d be lost without it.
I may pop round there. Only up the road. It’s not the same online but I didn’t want to stop plus he needs the money as well.
Thats nice mate, understated, glad we brought you back from the brink of purple! What were you playing before?
Esp ltd ec256. Only £300 but it’s comfortable.
I’ve not set new one up yet but the fret board is totally different. Gonna take some time to get used to it!
tell me about it. Moving to a 9.5" radius fretboard from something probably around 12" last night was interesting!
OK so not too much of a leap though to the Charvel in terms of output. Was just thinking what balancing problems you might face this week, along with the Marshall pedal. I was told at the start of my guitar journey, pros use far less gain than we think. I found out despite my desire to crank it, that this is true. The metal tones you will be seeking, are probably augmented by distortion rather than o/d. The difference is distortion is more powerful, but the edges are clipped aggressively, so it doesnt damage the dynamics of the tone, as in EQ. So you might be looking for a distortion pedal soon. An o/d will put gain in, but will be unadulterated and there will be lots of unwanted fizz at high levels. They are often too powerful in this regard, such that the last note hasnt died enough before the next note is played, which is mushy and unclear. The rule (I was told) is less gain more volume to preserve EQ, as the more gain we put in, the more the tone compresses and destroys EQ. It wont ring or scream without EQ, so a delicate balance is required. Compression is actually the enemy, so lean toward more volume than gain on the Marshall pedal, until you hit the tone you like.
This is true and I’m really struggling with this even now. I want sustain but unless you’re playing loud enough I’m forced to wind the gain or similar stuff up and it sounds utterly rubbish.
Yes its a problem with home playing and trying to recreate what attracted you to the guitar in the first place; and hence, why the trend now is for smaller wattage amps. I would expect to an extent your new amp is built for this.
It is, It’s still 40W though so plenty loud enough if I were to open it up but I suspect the speakers will be the limiting factor. They are decent by all accounts. I have to play through headphones though, so again I’m not able to open it up.
I think I seriously need to consider looking at pedals properly and putting a proper little board together just so I have control of the chain and pedals rather than relying on the in built effects and struggling through all the compromises associated with that. That said playing loud might remove some of those issues.
So new guitar.
Its a beaut but its gonna take a while to get used to that fret board as its so different to what I have used for last 9 months.
The guy I bought it off has lowered the strings to prevent damage in transit but the thinnest E string is now caught in the clasp. So I need to take it out and restring - a great introduction into Floyd Rose!
Watched a YouTube video and didnt even realize you cut the metal bolt off at the end of the string!
No complaints on mine other than my search for my “god tone”. I don’t think the guitar has been played at all. The strings were still shiny and needed stretching. I also had to tweak the string height on a couple of strings to get rid of some buzz.
The P90’s are quite interesting. Difficult as I haven’t played a single coil guitar in years but they appear warmer than a single coil but still retain a lot of tele type sparkle.
Hate it already . I cant get the defective string out without maybe having to sacrifice the string which is a pain as the bloke told me its brand new.
Reason I say that is that the screw at the back of the bridge which holds the string in is unmovable.
Might have to sit in its case until Mondays lesson and Ill get my tutor to show me what to do.
Shame but I have no patience for stupid things like this I get too wound up and want to break things.
Yes. Im a child.
Edit - how about if losen the string at the neck end completely as if Im taking it off? Might that make the bolt at the back turn?
I think that’s what you’re going to have to do. Take all the tension out of the string and then go from there.
Sorry to hear this. Not the best start with a new toy but take some solace my new guitar will also take some getting used to.
The screw should undo, what head is it? If its locked solid, was this in the sale information? Im guessing not.
I dont think I have right size Allen keys. Guitar didn’t come with any.
Need a 2.5m and a 3m.
I have one of them - the bigger I think (as I can undo the holes either side of the strings to raise the bridge) so need to get the other one.
It can be irritating like this, truss rods also. Just get the proper key as you wont be able to re-tighten by loosing the other end anyway.
I’ve ordered a set of 7 Allen keys from amazon. Coming Friday. Only £2.49
