I keep it simple if I can not do something on one part of the fret board I try further up (might sound strange but that’s not the point). Then if that works with placing and replacing fingers I start heading down 1 fret at a time (concentrating on basics, none of this curling the thumb over stuff my thumbs ‘pad’ just stays in the center of neck and when I don’t manage the exercise that’s the 1st thing I check as there’s always a tendance to flex the thumb into wierd positions).
I have never passed the beginners stage. Even so it’s amazing what you can do with a couple of simple cords. Just don’t try emulating great guitarists, who manage to contort into impossible positions at a wimp, just keep it basic. A major problem for me is my memory seems fucked so repetition is master.
Your memory! Just wait until you get to my age; I have the memory retention of a goldfish and…
…what where we talking about?
I had Lyme disease for over 15 years I don’t think that helped and probably puts my memeory where yours is (definitely the major remaining artefact of the illness). At least I had that wonderful feeling of feeling younger and younger when I got treatment. I’m not looking forward to this aging process.
A week with a guitar is way too early to tell if it will be a keeper or not Walshy.
I’ve never owned anything with a Floyd and wouldn’t buy a guitar with one either but that’s just me.
Get in set up and tuned, get the frets polished and then give it a month or two to see if you warm to it. If not then sell it on and buy something else. Hopefully the shops will be open and you can try a few instruments until you get one you like the feel of. Maybe even trade this one against something different. When lockdown ends and things eventually start to return to whatever the new normal will be I reckon there will be a glut of 2nd hand axes for sale from people who bought them during the restrictions to help reduce boredom.
I am beginning to suspect that @Lowton_Red is actually a UK version of Robert Johnson. Having wandered down to the crossroads at midnight, somewhere near the Mersey tunnel he traded his soul to play Blues guitar and happened to meet up with Boudica who was enjoying the latest cutting heads session
I actually am beginning to take to the different fret board.
I managed to get it in tune but the strings were about a foot off the fret board!
My tutor will take a look tomorrow.
Anyone know of or have any experience of Xotic pedals, on particular the BB+ overdrive?
Good reputation, highly regarded as well as the EP booster.
Cheers
Stumbled onto one at a good price but there doesn’t seem to be a huge amount out there plus I find videos of overdrive pedals frustrating. They never seem to cover what I’m looking for. It’s a proper minefield.
They can all mostly sound the same; I think there is a lot of spin and iconography around some of them. Im sure there are only broadly four main circuits - tonebender, colorsound, klon and Tubescreamer. The rest might be dressing. That Keeley you mentioned seemed more utility than the BB, as it was an o/d and booster. You will need a booster for more than 4/5 pedals because of tonesag. The only issue then is with the Keeley being integrated you cant get anything in between the booster and o/d, say if you want a chorus pedal or something.
yeah trying to decipher what pedal fits into what group is the tough bit. I thought the tonebender and coloursounds were more of a fuzz??
The Keeley D&M drive, which is an attractive option fits into both the Klon and tubescreamer families I think based on what I know Dan and Mick. Mick preferring a tubescreamer tone, Dan leaning in another direction.
The BB+ I’m not sure of, but it seems to cover a lot of ground with one side having an EQ, the other has a basic tone control and both sides being able to vary the compression within the pedals tone.
Also found a T-Rex Moller 2 which is another versatile option. Apparently based on a tubescreamer circuit but That Pedal Show got it sound very close to the King of Tone
Dunno, tonebender might be, but sure colorsound was an o/d. I think TPS have reviewed the BB. I remember the T-Rex moller being a great variation on the Analog man with TPS. Just get an Amp 11
Well new guitar wont be set up today. I was in bed last night by 8pm feeling sick and aching all over. Woke up and although I dont feel sick I ache from head to toe.
Uh oh. Get well bud. Hope it’s not that dreaded virus thingy.
Amp 11 is on the list but like it feels like dipping your toe in at the moment. No idea what to expect or if its right or otherwise.
That said I have just stumbled onto a really interesting option. It’s a full one off design / custom job. Dual pedal that is basically modelled on the Boss Blues Driver on one side and Ross distortion on the other. Stackable and switchable, and with a heap of clipping options. Price is very good too. I’m guilty of liking obscure at times
Thanks. It shouldnt be as Ive not seen anyone.
Crossing fingers then.
We’re super careful here though. Everything gets cleaned etc. before it comes into the house. That new pickguard arrived here late last week. Still haven’t opened it.
Oh I have not heard of this one, both those pedals are real classics, especially the Ross distortion which I think was the main pedal for such before that big muff thingy. What is this pedal? Come to think of it is the Boss blues driver the other classic circuit? It may be, another player I knew sought for ages one of the modded ones and was not let down. Not that I even know what the mod does, probably an EQ emphasis is most likely.
I’d call the Blues driver a stallwart. A pedal that everyone probably needs in their collection. The classic is the Marshall Bluesbreaker where john Mayer is personally responsible for creating a fan base for them. There’s currently one on Ebay for £400. Before 2003 you could get them for £30-40.
Having read up on the Ross it is a classic. It’s one of those first generation of distortion pedals that came after the invention of the Op amp chip (I think they call it). It came after the fuzz pedals which are transistor based. It’s been a fantastic history lesson if nothing else.
Anyway I’ve bought it. £70 was too good a price to ignore really no matter how obscure it is. It’s made by Tone Electronix and has more built in options and tweaks than is healthy. It will also run on 18v if I want more headroom.
I’ll post a pic when I receive it. I’ll be looking at Compressors next but I could easily seeme getting another couple of overdrives as well.
Fantastic
