I’m hoping to get better guitars the better I get.
I started with the ESP LTD EC-256 BLKS as that was around £300 new and perfect for a beginner.
The Ibanez and Schecters are a step up - £900 new and £400-600 2nd hand.
If I get really good I’ll go large on a guitar but that’s some way off.
I like 80s /90s Rock so that’s the sound I’m after. Shame Kramer and Charvel only come with floyd rose as they are off the table.
Maybe in the learning curve of guitar mastery, when purchasing, one eye should be kept on how easily the same item can be moved on without depreciating too much in the market. However, when reaching the peaks of your prowess, maybe then is the time to let your heart select rather than your head…
Nice.
Does anyone know how much tax or customs I’d pay on a guitar coming from us to uk.?
Found a guitar I like and the guy will do a deal but no point if I get stitched up with charges.
The guitar is £675 plus £95 courier fee.
I’ve tried looking on a few sites but can’t seem to find anything concrete.
Cheers
Dont do it.
I think that import duty is something like 2.5% - 4% depending on what it is and whether they pick it up. The killer is they will charge you VAT on it I think.
Yeah ive just read that the duty is as you say and then ill be hit with 20% VAT plus another courier fee for them picking it up from customs.
Where’s my US free trade deal John?
You should google…
Guitars for sale + auctions
Bidspotter always have a couple on sale somewhere
Im having no luck.
The ones I want are either abroad or in UK but not the colour I want.
If you want a new one the dates keep getting pushed back each week.
So frustrating.
Im loving this. Proper old school. Why do the ones I like have the fucking Floyd Rose.
Might just have to accept thats what Im going to have to get used to.
I think the problem with the charvel was the fret board I hated it.
These are more like Ibanez necks.
Same here… All the “shredder” guitars have them, it seems. In addition, I also have an aversion towards bolt-on necks but that’s because of the aesthetic aspect. I’m equally bad at playing all of them! That said, it doesn’t stop me from tearfully looking at all those EC-1000s that I can’t ship from Croatia - yet… Those guitars, they are something else. I’d really like to have one and maybe one day an LTD Snakebyte or some other Explorer-style guitar - but that in particular, I love the way it looks and the sound… Woof!
You need an Ibanez sz520. Through neck and Gibraltar bridge. No trem.
Oh look, I’m selling one, that’s convenient.
This is nice
Top end model. Mine is the one below it. Not 100% sure what the exact differences are.
Could be a weighty beast with all that mahogany.
If you’ll believe me, there are plenty of them on various ads here, second hand. For some reason, I’m yet to try one, literally everyone, you guys here included, say that those necks are paper-thin compared to other guitars.
A friend of mine has an LTD EC-1000 that he shipped from USA ages ago, that instrument is a beast… And then he decided to replace EMG 81/85 with SD JB/Jazz combo. That has to be one of the “fullest” sounding guitars I’ve heard in my life. The only shame is that he usually plays melodic stuff on it, some punk and heavy metal, but it’s a match made in heaven for anything influenced by Black Sabbath. No, I won’t apologise for sounding like a broken record, EC-1000 all the way!
Nice guitar. Not sure about the colour.
odd that because my Tele neck is thinner in both the width and depth.
back in the day I think they were awesome value for money. Others have now caught up with that idea I think and there’s good value to be had across the board.
So getting back to actually playing…
Been having trouble with my hands and wrists aching when playing for a period of time.
My Guitar tutor suggested playing the classical way as that is actually the best way for learning. Having it straight across your lap isnt natural. The classical way is the way the guitar would hang if standing up.
It was odd at first but after a while its stopped my hands and wrists aching.
It also better for strumming and because the guitar is at an angle and plectrum is straight it strums at the prefect angle. It also frees up your arm for better strumming as you not trying to keep the guitar straight with your arm. Its also good if you have footstall to put that under leg the guitar is laying on - use a few books if no footstall.
Just a tip for anyone like me who can never seem to get 100% comfortable.
Thats not me in the pic by the way!

That is one proud looking dude that he has a guitar…!
My only issue with playing this way is it gives me neck ache. You really need to know where all the chords you’ll be playing are.
