The PRS is such a sweet guitar.
Learning Sex Pistols Submission and a few Oasis tracks (Columbia and Acquiesce) in last few days.
I’m trying to enter the world of minor pentatonic/blues scale solos but I mightily suck at it. That said, I’ve bitten off way more than I can chew at the moment (the first solo of Beyond the Realms of Death by Judas Priest, my personal favourite solo of all time, and the solo from The God That Failed by Metallica).
I thought that if learn those, I could play a lot of solos that use these particular scales. Turns out, that what people who can actually play call “legato” is non-existent in my playing and I still can’t play any of those quickfire pentatonic licks that the likes of Jimmy Page made famous. My heart will go on, though!
Well last week I was just figuring out a chord sequence when the lights on my recently repaired amp went out. I assumed maybe a power cut. But no it had died again. So it’s back in for repair and has been for nearly 2 weeks and they don’t know what’s wrong with it so I’ve bought a little Blackstar Lt10 amp as back up. eBay £40.
I use this round my tutors house and it has an excellent sound for something so small.
@Noo_Noo You’ve been quiet in here lately?
Yeah. Sorry. I felt I needed to back away from social media and the like for a while. And I still feel that stepping back a bit is
Then work has been stupid so I haven’t been playing much. so stuff started to get a bit silly.
I really need to set up my little pedal board now so that it’s easy to set up and just play. At the moment pulling everything out, connecting it all up and then putting it all away an hour later is a pain. But a new job awaits before long which should signal some life changes for the better I hope.
I also have my eye on a new pedal to fill out that new board.
No need to apologize mate. Hope you’re well. Social media can be draining.
Ive gotten into Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds of late and my lad bought me the greatest hits vinyl for Fathers day. Some of my favourites are nice to play using the “Noel chords” so to speak. Good for strumming and using a capo.
This week my tutor has shown me a few tips and tricks and im learning Bon Jovi its my life and You Really Got Me riff - Van Halen version.
Ive also been invited to Jam with a couple of dads from my sons old football team so we are meeting up down pub next Friday to hammer out a few dates. One of the dads sons plays drums so it will be good to play with other musicians.
That will speed up your progress no end.
So going for a jam tonight with a few dads from my sons old football team.
Bought a cheap white baretta for £140 and gonna have it painted with a logo.
Anyone tried a guitar with a compensated nut? I’m thinking of having one installed in one of my guitars after being hounded by one of my friends who has one installed in each of his guitars - and they sound perfect, like they never go out of tune.
I never this could be an issue until I recently tried to play some songs alongside their studio recordings. I had my guitars set up by a guy who’s a genuine top class guitar tech and luthier, a certified NAMM master builder, and they play like a dream but no matter what tuner I use, no matter how correct the intonation is on open strings and at the twelfth fret, they just didn’t sound properly when played alongside the original song. So, I complained to my friend and he had this evil glint in his eye, “do you now understand why I use Earvana” and he’s been bugging me ever since. He’s in a few bands, so I understand why he’d be so intent on installing compensated nuts in his guitars but I wanted to hear the thoughts of bedroom players such as myself.

You no doubt are fully aware of these facts, but on the off-chance take a look.
I find when every problem becomes dissected enough, answers will appear… but that means taking a close look at the root cause and analysis of every segment that is connected.
Could be that you have different materials on your guitar strings then they have…!
I’ve never even heard of one until you mentioned it. I suppose there’s a place for it but for me I think it’s sounds too clinical. Plus we seem to have not needed it for a good few decades now. I guess I see any subtle little things like this as a part of a guitar players personal identity. We even got away with Telecasters with those horrible 3 screw bridges that were / are a pig to intonate until someone came up with compensated string trees for them.
One issue that a nut like this could not cover is any unintentional string bending that happens when the player frets the note. This is likely to vary across the whole fretboard and obviously from player to player. Again I’m back to that identity thing.
I guess I’m speaking as a skeptic from someone who has never even seen one or tried one so probably best that my ramblings are ignored
I’m also interested to hear why compensated nuts are not so easily encountered - maybe folks in more aggressive metal subgenres don’t pay much attention to how their major and minor chords sound, they are probably more obsessed about the sharpness and heaviness of their power chords and clarity of notes in solos. That said, I think Ernie Ball offers their compensated nuts in some high end guitars like Music Man.
I’m not sure why ESP stopped installing Earvanas in their guitars, those that are available in my part of the world and have it are pretty pricy and Earvana is always quoted as one of the reasons why the price is so high (it costs about 40 euros, go figure). I’m intent on buying one for my Schecter and seeing how it affects the tuning and sound because the model I have is pretty similar to LTDs.
So I bought a White Kramer a few months ago and had this painted on it.
Found a guy on Etsy and he only charged £150 after I had quotes of £600+
Its a copy of Jon Bon Jovi’s Guitar that was used on the New Jersey tour back in 88/89 and the design was taken from Jon’s jean jacket. The denim theme continues on the back of the guitar.
It now has strings on since I took this pic yesterday.
So you’re a Bon Jovi fan then?
Not really
I guess you like denim then. Shame, they’re a decent band, even though the guitarist went AWOL and Jon sings a bit funny now. You should check out their early stuff, really good.
Must get my guitar out again. Little one is starting guitar lessons in school now.
That looks like a great finish, bargain for £150!
