Guitars, Guitars and more toys that go with Guitars

I need an intervention from an instructor, that much I can say! As for my dependency, I swear I don’t do drugs, don’t drink, don’t smoke, don’t gamble - I need to have some vice! :joy:

I’m done, for a while at least. No excuses anymore I need to develop. Plus my new one needs a bit of work to lift it that little bit further.

Not sure if he played guitar either. Therefore has no place in this thread

Talking of upgrades. Nuts. Bone, tusq or other?

Compensated - if you ask me. My cousin brought me some Earvanas from a store in London, they are not cheap but they are worth every penny. Did wonders to my Schecter.

Unfortunately, I don’t get the reference… But coming from you, I have no doubt it reflects positively on me. :joy:

My only vices are guitars, gigs, football, and fitness.

I’ve heard the graphite ones are the best

Cheers.

I’ve had a bit of trouble intonating the new guitar. So before getting into a blind panic I need to address the nut and probably the tuners.

How accurate was / is the intonation on older guitar styles i.e. Les Pauls, Juniors etc. I know the older teles with the 3 brass saddles were “awkward”. I’m only a few cents out and honestly my poorly trsined ears cant pick up on it being out.

It completely depends on the guitar itself. I’d suggest taking it to a local luthier and having them do a checkup

Let the outrage begin.

Yeah she was named as one of the most influential guitarists in a recent poll too. I was about to kick off when one comment stopped me.

Basically if Swift has made a load of kids pick up a guitar then she has had a huge influence. I couldn’t argue that whether she is any good or otherwise.

History is littered with others on a similar vein. Kurt Cobain for example.

Cobain was probably a better musician. Taylor uses her guitar as a glorified prop.

I honestly dont know as i dont really listen to her stuff.

Cobain was slated in some circles for not being very proficient on the guitar but he was certainly a unique talent in songwriting etc.

Gibson have seen a business opportunity here. If they sell lots of Swift model guitars then its mission accomplished for them and being honest that’s not a bad thing. I believe we really need some new guitar heros. For me Swift isnt one but if a new generation of kids start playing, maybe a few will be.

If I told you I knew only one Taylor Swift song, would you believe me? That said, I know I’ve always been in the minority when it comes to that modern stuff that I perceive as empty. I work very hard to shield myself from such works of art/“art” - not out of hate or arrogance, it’s just that I find that stuff forgettable, sometimes insulting and not adding any substance or meaning. I swear, mega-popular music wasn’t like that when I was a kid, I still know a lot of songs by Cher, Backstreet Boys or Ricky Martin, a lot of them are quality within their rights.

I can’t comment on Swift as a guitar player but if she inspires more kids to take up a guitar rather than guns or drugs, she’ll have done well in her life. On the other hand, I did notice that Gibson were milking every drop out of their partnership with her but I guess it has a lot to do with their financial predicament. I can see why their top brass would big her up and mention her in the same sentence with The Beatles but I just shrug off such comments and carry on.

@Noo_Noo says the world needs more guitar heroes - I say the world needs more accessible music education. I’ve spent half of my life completely in awe of Swedish musicians, especially in the metal scene, because their understanding of the music, variety of influences and mastery. I mean, everything from ABBA via Entombed, In Flames, Opeth to The Hellacopters, Ghost or lesser known bands like Tribulation is just astounding to me. Then I recently read an interview with a guy from a band called Avatar that I had never heard and he spoke about how the educational system in Sweden supports little kids who want to learn to play an instrument. No wonder they grow up having learned to play and listen to all kinds of music and not just what’s served up on TV or social media.

Cobain to me was one of the most influential musicians of his time. It’s not an exaggeration that he and Nirvana “popularised” Grunge (the irony) and with his death, Grunge as a genre slowly died. Who knows what he can achieve if he stayed alive. And he did admit he doesn’t care much about good guitars or being in tune especially during live shows. I remember he mentioned he smashed his guitars so often that it made sense for him to use low grade guitars from Korea or China I cannot remember rather than the gibsons and fenders of the world.

As for Swift, I don’t listen to her, cannot understand her popularity but fact is she did what she did and she worked to where she is today so kudos to her.

Cobain says that being good at guitar gets in the way of originality and he rather be a good songwriter then guitarist
