Guitars, Guitars and more toys that go with Guitars

Did you have a séance or something?

Its great that kids are picking up guitars after seeing Swift play but when it comes to playing I harldy think that someone who litrally plays G, C and D chords is one of the best or the most influential players.
influential in making kids wanna pick up the guitar…yes. But not influential musicianship wise.

So your ruling out anyone that plays any pop music from the last 40-50 odd years?

As long as he doesn’t rule out Prince as a guitarist .

Of course not but she doesnt solo or anything just strums chords in a basic way as her somgs are basic

There’s definitely some truth in that. I play drums mostly and a bit of guitar. The best I’ve seen and played with are those that play with feel, rather than the more ‘learned’ musicians. Of course there’s a middle ground

It’s not necessary that a good musician has to be a good composer. And vice versa ofcourse too.

Cobain probably is a good composer (In eyes of many). I’m not a huge fan of Nirvana(Prefer Alice in Chains / Pearl Jam/ Soundgarden more) but their music was miles more influential than Taylor Swift.

The popular musicians of today cater to people with limited attention span , immediate gratification and have been “taylored” to accept style over substance.

Grunge was always an offshoot of Alt Rock which existed before and after Nirvana.

Prince was a majestic guitar player! I could recognise it even if I could never get into his kind of music. One of those people who were great at everything they did - I swear he could have also been a great astronaut or a neurosurgeon if he wanted to.

Also, he’s another example of a popular artist whose music was levels ahead of today’s popular artists in terms of creativity, diversity, memorability…

Prince was an amazing artist. 70s and 80s pop were great. Even till the 90s.

It’s only from 2000s onwards that pop as a genre got killed.

You guys would have heard it anyway

I wish I would have been Harrison’s kid there

From the very limited insight I have into the Swift ‘oeuvre’ - I don’t think that phenomenon has that much to do with music at all. It’s mostly simple stuff that has worked for decades, sometimes centuries, generally arranged in such a way that it’s more like a background to the lyrics, which is what it’s all about. That stream of consciousness, diary type of stuff that apparently her target audience finds relatable and then get to speculate endlessly what certain lines mean in relation to her life. It’s more like an ongoing soap/reality TV show with easter eggs thrown in set to music. I mean, good for her, I guess, it works.

You got that right. It’s a soap opera.

People nowadays are so conditioned into what music they should listen to that they lose their individuality.

Not sure I agree with that tbh. Music listening in general is much more fragmented and individualised than it was decades ago.

Maybe. But the music which is being brought on to the mainstream is largely very homogeneous. The artists have changed but the music hasn’t. It’s become very formulaic nowadays.

There were progressive bands like genesis , pink floyd which were touching mainstream. There aren’t any similar groups/people nowadays who can be near that.

Mainstream music largely doesn’t exist anymore like it used to. It’s a very, very small group of a few megastars, the rest of ‘the charts’ are largely irrelavant, you don’t even need a lot of sells/ streams to make it into them compared to the past. And the rest of the music scene is mostly fragmented into endless niches and subgenres and nostalgia acts.

Now that we’ve agreed that Swift could probably hold her own round a camp fire, these arrived today. 4 wire humbuckers. Just saw an opportunity and took it. I shall be focussing on tuners and nut first but while its got new strings on i’m just playing, remembering slowly.

Have we?
