Well, that’s the point. You can’t. You can offer an incentive to sign a new contract such as increased wages or a hefty signing on fee.
There is no point in benching a player who doesn’t want to sign a contract, only one that doesn’t want to play.

Why would he want to go Madrid?
Surely he has had enough over the last couple of years, covering Trents defensive inadequacies
I guess if you’re looking for silver linings then:
Which doesn’t seem like it should be an insurmountable problem.
It sounds like the kind of chat that Salah was giving before signing. I think it will get done
I hope it gets done.
A defensive quartet of Konate , Virg , Guehi , Gomez and someone like Endo , Bajcetic in the early rounds of the domestic league cups / non consequential matches of the UCL group stages will work pretty well.
I’ll still think we need a 5th CB but hopefully it’s another recruit from the academy.
A few of his quotes from last season, even in a classic always half-joking Ibou style, left the impression that he’s not satisfied with the difference of praise and potentially wages between him and Virgil.
This it looking clearer Konate isn’t resigning so he has to be sold now.
Interesting. You think anyone gives us an offer to make it worth our while?
We should be in the same position as Palace are.
Re-signing?
New contract
Trouble his two main suitors (Real Madrid and PSG) can both wait it out given neither are in desperate need of a CB. Who else are we selling him to?
I know its a difficult one. You could get either of those trying to gazump the other and get him now.
If Konate leaves this summer we need to sign two central defenders. We probably have reams of data on all the possibilities, but it seems a bit rushed to me.
I’m fine with Guehi as an upgrade over Quansah.
At that point I’d rather keep Konate and address it again next summer. But if either Real Madrid or Paris did offer us something useful this summer, I would probably sign Diomande.
Konate and Quansah out.
Diomande and Guehi in.
It would really ruin Crystal Palace’s summer. Sorry chaps.
Edit
And while I do think Hato at Ajax is a good young player, I would be concerned about having two short-ish central defenders if we signed him and Guehi. Diomande is more the size of Konate, or thereabouts, and he can play too.
Real will surely wait for Rudiger’s deal to be up next summer and Kimpembe’s is up the same time at PSG.
Don’t see either forking out enough to make us think about selling him this summer when they’ll both fancy their chances next summer.
With so much change this summer already I’m not sure we’ll want to change two centre backs this window on top of everything else.
So you’re happy to let him walk for nothing.
It seems to me that Konate is in the driving seat. With a year to go if he has his eyes on a lucrative Bosman, most likely to Real Madrid or PSG, then that’s what he will do.
At that point we will keep a very good player for another season, while we become back to back title winners.
Not happy but I also don’t see anyone putting an offer on the table that makes it worth our while having already sold Quansah. But if someone stumped up £50m I think we’d have to consider it.
But not selling him now would also give us another 12 months to try and convince him to sign a new deal. And maybe Guehi stays put and we bring him in next summer with Konate going.
Feels like an unnecessary position to have put ourselves in but I guess most of these big renewals were on hold until the Salah and van Dijk situations were resolved.
