Understandable but I thought their partnership was gettin worse as the season wore on, the spaces between them was horrific at times and teams were exploiting it.
I would be disappointed with a lower finish. I think we have the players for a 3rd to 5th finish depending on injuries and bedding in. We are not starting from scratch and we sacked a manager that finished 5th - we should be looking for a 4th or better finish.
We kind of are given that this year we’ve seen the de emphasising of fitness and lacked any kind of structural organisation, and are losing some key experienced players.
It may be that Iraola can kick on from the off but it’s not a given. I’m probably one of the more positive folks on here and while I could see us challenging for the title next season, I think better performances and a solid top four finish would make me happy.
I expect us to challenge for the title. That should always be the aim.
The best thing Slot did as coach was that when he arrived he was very clear that was the expectation. People were talking to him about a transition season and he shut that down.
Whoever the new coach is needs to be on board with that straightaway. Every season we should be looking to win the title.
If that’s the case, I wish him nothing but the best of health and that his performances for Real Madrid are always as good as his 2025/26 performances for Liverpool.
I wrote it above, it was always the most likely outcome, and it must have been decided a while ago already, in January or so, when we had our dark spell of losses and didn’t seem to get out of it. It’s unfortunate that we hit such a bad season just when his contract was running out, but then again, looking at Trent, it was maybe always going to happen, no matter how well we were playing or not.
Also, this is a French lad. They are raised up with the thought that La Liga / Real or Barca are the absolute pinnacle in football. It’s the same for all footballers of Latin origins to be fair.
Paradoxally, I don’t think that Mourinho’s football will bring the best out of him. He is so good for high-pressing teams, because of his recovery pace. That’s why Klopp brought him in at the time. But Mourinho isn’t in charge of transfers made at Real Madrid of course. They just see it as the opportunity to bring in one of the best CBs ‘for free’. He’s still young, and they can always resell him if it doesn’t work out for him there.
