Since that post I have increased my awareness of the term woke and it’s origins.
From what I gather it’s origins are from the black civil liberties movement and the ‘wake up’ call. It even found it’s way into the film ‘The Blues Brothers’.
Anyway this is where ‘woke’ became a dirty word for the right in the US who want to stiffle anything that gives any minority a voice. Like ‘black lives matter’.
It’s gone so far that the word ‘woke’ has penetrated the whole anglophone world to the right. It refers to any minority group.
We had a poster on here ‘Toro’ who was obsessed with this saying the left and in particular the Democrats in the US should drop all this ‘cultural’ stuff. Yet if they did these minorities wouldn’t have anyone to discuss with. The right would lynch them.
As an aside, have we now moved from the “anglo-phone” to the “meirca-phone”… seems the proto-English language is now driven by the more sophisticated/developed America (possibly even more so by a subculture that are US based youtube/twitch/insta/etc chatrooms..).
I think it was around even earlier than that. I have an old Leadbelly record in which he says, “stay woke”, largely meaning “watch out and don’t get lynched.”
Haha you got me there for a moment, don’t do it too often my brain isn’t up to it, but yes things completely unrelated to the general Anglophone world except the US are dominant.
I mentioned an example, that I find completely obscene, ‘black lives matter’ where you even get twats in the UK responding to with ‘white lives matter’. Wtf is this ignorance?
