I looked for this to see if it was a thing… basically I wanted to know if you could hire someone to post on forums. I did not follow the links but the front end descriptors indicate, yes, you can quite easily hire people to post on forums. I have often wondered what this means in terms of business, politics and ultimately basic trust between individuals.
If a country/entity so wanted, with time, patience and a methodical approach, it could subtly and assuredly, achieve any end. This is of course already happening but I guess people likely don’t appreciate the sophistication and depth to which this sort of thing can be applied. Beyond the camps/armies in country X or Y, there are likely armies of individuals that can be hired as dis-/influencers for nefarious purposes.
There is an element of the Dark Forest mentality that is creeping in as view points become more polarised and reactions more extreme. It is rather sad.
This has been around for a while, 10+ years at least. It was mainly done for SEO reasons, however the Google algorithm changes over the years killed this strategy.
There are company’s that do the same with fake reviews (google maps, etc), so you cant just go by the ranking out of 5. You need to look at the actual reviews and read the ones with actual pictures on the avatar and make sure they have several reviews, and then you need to look at their other reviews to make sure the person isn’t reviewing a local restaurant in New York and then a day later in Brussels.
My comment was more linked to forms such as for baking, knitting, footy (whichever flavour), mechanics, lego or what ever. These forums are inhibited by individuals that are interested in said theme but they also represent a specific demographic that can be targeted for specific ends… To do this well for a specific country you likely need local assets…
