Hex was the origin (made by the wizards) which ran on ants. This lead to the glooper made by Hubert Turvey (Topsy Lavish’s nephew) which rather too accurately modelled the flow of money in the city.
I can’t recommend Pratchett enough, brilliant writing. By far my fav character is Sam Vimes, the boss of the City Watch and a very good copper.
Making Money (when the machine is encountered) is the follow up to Going Postal. If you can’t stand the witches and wizards and magical fantasy, at least read Going Postal then Making Money. Supremely funny and insightful books.
Heard this year’s ago at Uni although I heard Phillips was a janitor at the time. He then went on to develop the Philips curve model which set out that employment and inflation had a stable inverse relationship.
