January Transfer Window 2023

I find this one odd. He was loved by Pep at start of season now they are binning him off?

Maybe those rumours about players falling out with pep is true, is he one of the 5 that was listed?

A bit weird he won’t stay here at least as a squad player, but things have happened. They’ve promoted Rico Lewis, Ake is playing better lately, etc.

First, this is not directed at you @mattyhurst but is a general observation. Why is it that being critical in more than one topic about our transfer policy, FSG, Gakpo irritates so many people but I bet that if we sign Bellingham this summer one can speak about that in all topics on this board and we will hear not so much as a peep, in fact, people will join in as much as they can … :sunglasses:

That Berge from Sheff United is going to Fulham or Newcastle according to SSN

That’s a very good question. I think people in general tend to be more irritated about negative things popping up everywhere, especially if the prevailing mood is already negative, whereas positive things/banter is much more welcome?

Ivan Ilic from Hellas Verona to Torino on loan.
Andy Delort from Nice to Nantes on loan.
CJ Egan-Riley from Burnley to Hibernian on loan.

This.

It’s also been well documented about Chelsea and their squad of 1000’s. If they start shifting some of that their spending will come down.

Sadly we aren’t playing the same game.

I think Jürgen cares too much about his players as people to ever do that. Even when we’ve wanted to get rid of players we were more willing to lower their prices than to force them out by deregistering them.

Even in the same sense I don’t think we’ll get rid of Fabinho like that. If anything he’ll be kept around for backup before being eased out slowly, unless we have a primary target we want to bring in right away to take that place as a starter.

I’m wondering however if Bajcetic’s progress has changed those plans.

There were discussion on here a few weeks ago on Pep’s adoption of the weird 3 at the back system that is an advancement of his old Bayern trick of pushing his FBs into CM. A lot of focus recently has been the role of the kid Lewis in that (the defender with a most obviously non-defender role), but its been going on all season and pretty much all of their formerly important defenders have seen themselves on the outside. You can connect the reported dissatisfaction to the players who seemingly out of no where have found themselves out of favour. Cancelo is one of these. But Dias and Laporte also have also both found themselves largely unable to get games even when fit and available and watching 3 clearly inferior “defenders” playing instead.

Radja Nainggolan from Antwerp to SPAL on a free.
Jayden Oosterwolde from Parma to Fenerbahce for €6m.
Rasmus Lauritsen from Dinamo Zagreb to Brondby for €2.5m.
Joao Gomes from Flamengo to Wolves for €18.7m.

Is Gomes potentially a replacement for Nunes next summer?

Has he already been granted a work permit to play in the Prem?

Not at all clued up on the latest criteria for what’s prerequisite, I thought that you needed to either be a full national player, some kind of dual European citizenship or needed a spell playing in Europe?

Yasin Ayari from AIK to Brighton for €6m.

Looks like he’s a midfielder, let’s see if he’s kept/used immediately in the first team squad as Brighton might become a bit light in midfield if Caicedo leaves.

Mac is there, Gross also, but usually used a bit everywhere. Moder is out injured, Lallana also and Gilmour isn’t impressing much on his loans.

Zerbi needs help from upstairs with Brighton making so much money and losing important starting players. Trossard was a good sale, but Caicedo if he leaves, they will have to do something. Better preparation also if they really make it to Europe next season (which of course, they will try to do).

@Hope.in.your.heart, thank you, but please could you remove my name from the thread’s title.

:joy:

It’s better to keep it simple as always.

Don’t listen to him @Hope.in.your.heart

It was thought as a homage for your stellar work in here, mate.

But allright, if this is your wish…

Thank you, it’s better like that.

It’s certainly not my thread, it’s the forum’s.

I like doing it because transfer movement interest me, so it’s a pleasure to keep myself and others (or each other) updated. Even better then when we discuss certain moves, find out about new players, remind ourselves about players we forgot about, etc.

I’ve been keeping a track of U21 spending since the 2019/2020 season. Cost figures are presented as a ‘a minimum of’ because lots of youth transfers have undisclosed costs (which I assume to be 0 for balance). It’s safe to assume the real cost would be higher.

Chelsea have had 125 players either signed to the club or representing them at U18/U21 or 1st team level aged 21 or younger in that time. They spent a minimum of 261.14m on those players and recouped 49.20m in sales. This means Chelsea spent on average 2.09m per U21 player over the last 3 and a half years, while recouping an average of 1.2m per sale.

Liverpool have had 109 players either signed to the club or representing them at U18/U21 or 1st team level aged 21 or younger in that time. They spent a minimum of 24.22m on those players and recouped 80.83m in sales. This means Liverpool spent on average 0.22m per U21 player over the last 3 and a half years, while recouping an average of 2.38m per sale.

I must admit the number of players used is surprisingly close (although Liverpool certainly boosted their numbers this season using lots of U16s at U18 level) but you can see on a cost per player basis the massive discrepancy between how the two clubs are run. Admittedly a couple of those Chelsea players were signed straight into the first team (Havertz and Badiashile for example) but Liverpool just have no comparable ability to lose money on their player development set up.

Currently Chelsea lose about 1.7m for every U21 player they have. Liverpool profit about 0.52m for every U21 player they have.

Oliver Burke from Werder to Millwall on loan.
Michael Cuisance from Venezia to Sampdoria on loan.
Kaan Ayhan from Sassuolo to Galatasaray on loan, €400k fee.

Ayhan is a CB, we’ll see what that means for their interest in Phillips.
