Very interesting performance from him yesterday. I think he’s up for both the physical challenge and playing it from the back but I also think he needs to work on his fitness. He switched off too easily for Delap’s throw-in that led to the penalty, I had the impression it was due to fatigue. The fourth official didn’t help with delaying his sub, though…

Yeah, he’s played well in lots of aspects and that appears to be giving him cover for some bad decisions on multiple of the goals we’ve conceded so far. There are enough scapegoats that people can craft stories to blame those guys instead.

Yep, definitely a few errors so far but I think he has looked promising. Fairly quick and strong and positive on the ball. Would expect a few errors at his age.
To be fair, I thought for Newcastle goals, a big issue was Van Dijk not taking charge of the situation and Jacquet looked uncertain if to go for the ball or the man. I suppose it could be argued Jacquet could also have taken charge.
Without overcomplicating, he’s looked very good and you can see that there’s more to come once he gets himself fully fit, which he almost surely isn’t.

He has to cover for VVD which mean lots of running fast, like Konaté once did (but didn’t last season).
Tbh I don’t think it’s easy playing alongside VVD.
I’m not if it’s still the case in Virgil’s advancing years, but playing RCB for us was the toughest gig in football - just because you got relentlessly targeted because nobody was running at Van Dijk

Yes, VVD plays the cover the other CB has to play the stopper and then cover VVD’s covering mistakes. Since VVD’s ACL that has been varyingly difficult and more so theses last few years.
These first 2mayches this season has seen VVD often too deep then ignoring the defensive line when pushing out bearing far too forward i.e not keeping to his covering role and being the one to decide when to play off side. It throws everyone off. It’s a lack of concentration or something.
I’ve never been a fan of him being captain then again have we anyone else who could take that mantle?
I don’t think so which imo is a recruitment issue.
I’ve liked what I’ve seen so far.

I am at a loss with Virg’s covering and dropping too deep, it isn’t as though players are leaving him dead pace wise, he still is fast enough to recover.
Also, he is the leader, the experienced player and should be talking to Jacquet, all the time to let him know what to do and which of them actually presses the ball, which isn’t happening.
It isn’t difficult to do!

That should come together with time. I don’t think it’s a coaching error like asking Konaté to mark tightly. However some of Virgil’s decisions are baffling ATM. Pushing out without any regard to the defensive line is criminal for a covering CB. 2 meters Infront of the other defenders?
Being too deep was a problem we had when he first arrived so that seems to be his inclination. Klopp sorted it out.
Iraola does expect his defenders to squeeze up and if the opposing CF drops into the hole then nearest CB to follow him and put pressure on.
But otherwise Virg is 2nd guessing himself and doesn’t need to.

That is the one I am shocked has got so little attention. If you are a CB pushing out you have to make sure you are bringing the rest of the line with you. Virgil was a good 10 yards ahead of Jacquet, and you can criticize the French lad for not recognizing that, but Virgil himself had no idea either.
You’ve then got people criticizing MacAlister for being weak in the challenge, despite him getting back to cover a 3 on 1 none of his actual defenders had any fucks about doing anything about, including his captain and CB anchor who was ambling forward without a care of what was happening behind him
