You do not, under any circumstances, turn your back. When you do and get beaten you rightly have to take criticism on the chin, no matter how clever the touch that beats you is.
Thought he had a good game today.
Defending/goalkeeping 1st rule block the shot, yes turning his back wasnât ideal, but whether he did or didnât he wouldnât have been able to cover the cut back and finish. For excellent skill from Mitoma taking the shot so quickly.
I wonder whether some of you have ever played football or sport because momentum when trying to lunge to block cannot be changed.
Well said some just looking to scapegoat when it was a fantastic piece of skill, something Mo would do in his pomp
Turns the wrong way and takes himself out of the game, bad defending although trying to block a shot was a not a bad decision. Execution poor.
The Welbeck goal is still way more to do with Konateâs positioning than Gomez. Konate gets beaten by a fluck on from a throw in, heâs wrong side of Welbeck or not close enough to Ferguson you can call it either way. Then Gomez scrambles across to cover which leaves him exposed to the attacker going inside him.
For me that is the issue with a right footed defender playing left side he, went with his right foot, but as I have just said in the post game thread, doesnât matter which foot he goes with to block the shot he wouldnât have been able to recover as for me it was fantastic skill from Mitoma has he chopped back and hit the shot so early.
Sometimes you just have to applaud the skill.
Dont matter if you are left or right footed - first rule you are taught as a defender is dont turn your back.
Gomez was 5th choice last season at times and its for a reason. He is the weakest CB we have out of the main 4
A lot of anguish over something that probably wouldnât have made a difference anyway. He shouldnât have turned his back, but the important part shouldnât be the manner of his attempt to block the shot but the fact that Mitoma found himself with the ball completely unmarked at the far post in the first place.
No one picked up on two Brighton players completely alone in the near post, no one realised that Mitoma was unmarked at the far post. Totally taken by suprise. Piss poor defending by everyone, not just Gomez.
Decent game with a few big mistakes, which is about standard from Gomez.
Turning the back was poor as was his clearance a few minutes earlier.
Not good enough but we already knew that.
As I have said, whether he turned his back or not, he had to attempt the block and by doing so there was no way he could have stopped what Mitoma did!!!
If you believe anything else you are just blinkered and looking for the usual easy target to blame.
Also show me a footballer that has never turned his back!!!
Is he our only defender who does that? Off the top of my head it seems to be a pretty common thing in our squadâŚ
It was VVDâs speciality pre World Cup.
1st goal out of position.
2nd goal header straight to the Wolves player in our own box.
3rd goal mix up with Baj
Horrendous, slack display from daydreamer Joe.
So poor today itâs impossible to defend him.
There was a worse Centre Back on the park.
1st Goal, why is Gomez out of position, he was covering initially out wide where Robbo should have been, then when recovering Robbo was in the LCB channel but stepped wide before Gomez had regained his position!!!
2nd goal he should have received a call from Ali but had to get something on to it, or do you want him to just leave it without a call?
3rd Goal Stefan lost possession but somehow it is Josâ fault.
FFS scapegoating
BTW I donât think he has been as good as he was but some people just use easy targets to score likes
Iâm sure he wouldnât get the stick he does if he shaved of those ridiculous Wolverine style sideburns.
I do feel he has lost the mobility to change direction quickly which is possibly down to his injuries, he like Trent gets done too easily when someone chops back changing direction.
I couldnât care less what are the playersâ names, but he gets stick because his defending has been of the lowest quality over a largest period of time, out of our current CBâs. Injuries havenât helped, unfortunately. Nothing against the guy. He was brilliant at the start of 18/19, that was the best Joe Gomez. And that was a long time ago. And even then, we knew what were his weaknesses. Klopp spoke about them. I just donât want players like that to stay here for a decade on the basis of homegrown, versatility, a bit of pace and technique. At some point some of them need to be told, sorry, but itâs time to find a new club.
The Mitoma goal for Brighton he got lambasted for turning his back when trying to block when no matter what he did he didnât effect the outcome.
The one with Welbeck he was moving with speed to cover Ibou who had no idea where Welbeck was and Welbeck made the prefect touch to lift it over him and finish, when you are moving at pace it is hard to change your momentum and direction.
And against Wolves one poster has blamed him for all 3 goals, which I have elaborated on earlier
I donât think he has been at his best level, but some of the scapegoating is just next level and probably a lot is from armchair fans who have never played the game or been involved with team sports
