Ouch! Thanks for pointing that out, I hadn’t realised. I had assumed cut players would have some payout owing to them and that it meant that it just didnt show up on the club’s spending on the squad.

If you look at NFL contracts for example they’ll say something like $200m over 5 years with $60m guaranteed. Generally speaking that means the player has really signed for $60m with optional years of the contract that could take it up higher to $200m.
US sports tend to be very favourable to ownership.

I’m pretty sure we could in theory reach an agreement to terminate Joe’s contract, involving a payment of some kind up the remaining value of his wages, but the key point is Joe would need to agree to it, and if he’s in the position of being unlikely to land as good a salary elsewhere he has no real reason to want to do so.
I think literally the only time I can recall this being done in the PL is when Chelsea fired Mutu for being a coke fiend and failing a drugs test. And I still think they had to face legal action of some kind.
I’m not sure they even did it with Mudryk.

Does that even avoid it counting towards squad costs for FFP rules? If it still counts then it probably isn’t even worth doing anyway?
Actually I think it was Mutu who got sued by Chelsea, I remember he had to pay them back some crazy amount like £5m.

FFP isn’t a thing any more, don’t know how it would work under the new system, but honestly I wouldn’t do it anyway at this point simply because we’re so thin in defence, but hopefully over the next couple of windows we can clear the way to let him go once his current deal runs out.

I think hell get a goal for us this season, worth keeping him just for that
I get that he can’t be relied on due to fitness issues… and thus shouldn’t get a contract extension.
But:
A) Let’s first see how long he is out for and
B) Even at 10 games a season, that is still 10 games of rest for someone like VVD.
C) Let’s not bash Joe for his injury woes because I’m sure he hasn’t wanted them either.

Unfortunately, Joe doesn’t even seem capable of getting through one half, let alone one game. If he stays we still need reinforcements.
At this point Joe should be found a role to help the coaching team, if he hasn’t already. Then if he is able to gain proper fitness compete for a playing spot.
I feel as though that’s a little unfair considering he did manage to get quite a few minutes last season, no?
Possibly, as his cup appearances record were better than I thought, but overall I don’t think so especially when we are expecting the team to play with more intensity this season - and that last season we had a real need for someone like him to cover RB but opted for midfielders to step in to do that job for much of the season.
21 league games last season, only 5 of them saw him play 45 minutes or more (2 around 66 minutes, 1 at 77 minutes and 2 at 90 minutes.). Played less than 10 minutes in 7 of them, with another game where he featured for 11 minutes. He was on the bench and didn’t play for 8 of the first 12 matches.
3 of those games I think he came off injured within 30 minutes of playing.
Looking at the CL games he did manage 3x 90 minute matches in his 6 games and another of 68 minutes but the last match he came off after only 21 minutes after having come on as a substitute.
He played 90 in both league cup games. In the FA cup out of four matched he played 90 once and 60+ in two further games, with 15 minutes in the other. I cant remember if these timings were planned substitutions to allow young players time on the pitch though.
