Joe injured again, after 1 pre season game. I really feel for him, but it must be time to move him on somewhere else. Through no fault of his own, he just canāt be relied on. I think heās an excellent defender on the rare occassions heās fit, but at this point itās just not doing us any favours. His wage could be spent on a decent player who is available.
100%. I was a big fan of JoGo - I think there was a 6 month or so period when he outshone Virg at CB - but we canāt count on him as a CB and with our current lineup of 3 CBs we desperately need a reliable fourth option.
How long is his contract? Pay him off? Canāt honestly see anyone wanting him..
Sad to say but sell him now !
No ifs no buts just get him off the payroll.
Thanks for everything Jo and best wishes for the future but you can no longer perform a useful function for LFC.
How do you propose we do that?
There is a pretty big āifā and a not insignificant ābutā which is that he is under contract, with a year remaining and weād be reliant on finding a club that literally does zero diligence on signings willing to take him on.
He will leave next summer and probably retire from football at that point.
For now he stays, but we cannot rely on him as part of our defensive ranks. Fortunately he is home grown so he can just knock about as a bonus optio.
This is the likeliest scenario - the ship has sailed when Gordon move broke down and his sale to Newcastle didnāt go through. That said, I have no qualms when a player bought for peanuts wins everything with Liverpool before leaving on a free 10+ years later but it will still be the case of āwhat might have beenā with him.
Thatās a slightly aggressive reply in my opinion and the question doesnāt need to be in that tone of voice. But anyway, maybe we could release him from his contract (not sure how long is left) and use his wages for a back up cb? What are your thoughts on what the club should do with him?
Let him go on a free.
Heās under contract. You cannot just release him and magically get to save the wages he is contractually owed. The only way to do that is for someone to buy him and pick his salary obligation (who will do that?) or he agrees to forgo his salary or possibly retire
Iām happy for JoGo to stay, I just want another CB in who can make up one of our 4.
Ahhh, I see. Weād need to pay his contract up to release him would we? I guess unless thereās a clause in it then youāre probably right.
In that case heāll sit with the medical staff for the next 12 months and be paid several million quid to do so.
I really rate him, Ithink we all do and if he stayed fit he could have been a legend alongside VVD. Such a shame for the lad in terms of his legacy. Heāll probably be remembered fondly by most.
Thatās what I meant when I said release him, but as someone pointed out, realistically nobody is paying his wages as heās injured constantly. The likely scenario is heāll sit in the treatment room, get paid millions of pounds and then retire. Hopefully heāll have a really good career in coaching or something he wants to do after football. He deserves it, top lad.
Maybe heāll become a physiotherapist. He must know enough about the subject by now.
Actually it was even after that - he had a move lined up last summer when it looked like we were bringing in the lad from Palace.
If it were that easy, the club would have done it by now.
Unless Joe Gomezā mum is Director of Football somewhere, nobody is giving him any kind of deal. Itās basically flushing money down the toilet. Clubs arenāt stupid, and Gomez has had a couple of season where he hasnāt shown any ability to put together more than a couple of games before breaking down.
The only way he goes anywhere is if we pay off his contract. And what would be the point in that? If he was using up a non HG place, that would be an argument - but he isnāt. The club canāt lose anything at this point keeping him around.
I predict he will see out his contract, leave next summer, and in all honesty I wouldnāt be surprised to see him retire at that point.
Thatās the whole point of a contractā¦
It wasnāt meant to be aggressive. Iām just curious as to how you think we move on a lad who is under contract, and looks like he canāt play 15mins of football without crumbling.
American sports can cut players and often just void their contract without paying so can be confusing if the poster isnāt used to non-American things.
