Sorry, but that’s hardly a novel concept.
I guess I’ll have to duck for cover now, because absolutely everything Klopp does and says has to be celebrated
I agree there’s been such focus on every Klopp fart in last weeks and months (no surprise if it’s among Liverpool public), but that part what he said I liked.
That’s fine.
But in the context of the National Team - everything is flooded with German flags, in public viewing, bars, at homes, on cars, face paints and endless other accesoires. At the very latest since 2006 this has been completely normal everywhere and at the very latest since then have there been these points about ‘postive patriotism’.
So no, he isn’t ‘bringing the flag back’.
Of course it’s not all robotic black and white. He sent an extra message.
Yup. One that has been made countless times before, in the shape of an Adidas logo and with a slogan derived from a massive hit song that was played at nauseam at the Euros in 2016.
All fine, but excuse me, if I’m not massively impressed by that. That’s all.
I love what he said in the press conference.
It wasn’t until 1990, i started supporting England national team, I truly felt I was allowed to be part of the England fan base as a brown person. Before, we had to deal with National Front and BNP and pushed off the swings and getting beaten up in the park.
I am glad we have German manager managing our team.
I havent seen the full interview, but did he make his comments in the context of the national team, or was he reflecting wider than that following the ADF’s recent election victory?
I do wish Klopp hadn’t joined redbull. Even if it was a largely ceremonial role.
We don’t have to agree or celebrate everything he says. His legacy at Liverpool is enough to be honest.
But I like what he did here, regarding the flag. In Ireland we will have to reclaim our flag from the so called patriots..
The AfD have certainly made comments about the number of ethnic minority players who play for the German National Team. The national broadcaster did a documentary about it a few years ago, and there are definitely a minority of fans who adhere to a blood and soil version of nationalism.
Oddly enough, these groups often reject the current German flag as it is associated with the revolutions of 1848, 1918 and 1989. The Reichsbürger movement, for example, use the Black-White-Red Reichsflagge (partly as any specifically Nazi imagery is strictly forbidden.)
I could write a long post to further expand on why I wasn’t impressed at all by that, why I think it’s banal platitudes using a fictional strawman argument that have been made a gazillion times and at best is preaching to the choir and at worst will only further alienate people by virtue of yet another globetrotting multimillionaire West-German lecturing about who the ‘wrong people’ are and how they should feel about their country by handing out German flagged Adidas logo caps to a bunch of journalists. Or how that is pretty much the same kind of talk about national pride that certain politicians claimed for years could half the AfD. Plus what RedWhippet alluded to.
Or I could just clap along and agree, because yeah, wrong people and I want openness and empathy and it can be interpreted as a dig to the AfD. Maybe I should leave it at that. And yeah, Klopp is/ was a great football manager.
Boris Bocker was my tennis hero growing up (even had some elements of his service motion in my serve)…and of course Jurgen ![]()
It’s perfectly understandable where you are coming from, but I don’t think that Klopp sees it the same way.
He is seeing the rise of far-right and he’s doing something that he thinks it will help, because he is who he is. I doubt that he cares whether it alienates some people or it registers like the same lip service repeated ad nauseum by politicians.
Would have mattered more if he hadn’t joined RB Leipzig
Regardless of whether you approve of it or not, or whether you like him or not, he has once again sparked a public debate. That’s just how he is: if you want Klopp, you get the whole Klopp package. Those who dislike him will question or criticize everything anyway. I think he is aware of that, but also presumably couldn’t care less.

‘plakatier.er’: ‘Klopp is the perfect example of the fact that there are also people on the right who think they’re on the left’
‘chp_ac’: ‘As someone on the left, you certainly don’t have to like Jürgen Klopp, or what he says’
The term ‘Intelligenzallergiker’ was coined for people like that. Describing Jürgen Klopp as right-wing is a no-go.

National team: Klopp sends an email to all former international players
The national team manager is seeking support! Jürgen Klopp (59) has not yet managed a match for the DFB. Yet behind the scenes, he is already working to win over the key figures in German football.
BILD has obtained an email that Klopp sent to all DFB All-Stars on Saturday. That is, to all former national team players who have ever worn the jersey of a German national side. Whether they played one international match or over 200. Once a national team player, always a DFB All-Star.
The new national coach’s message is clear: Klopp wants to rally the entire DFB family behind him.
Right at the start of the email, he writes: “I am incredibly proud to have been part of the DFB family since 15 August. Your family.” He then goes on to thank the former international players for their service and their contribution to the successes of the German national teams.
Klopp continues: “As a player, I was miles away from being selected; today, as national team manager, I am able to make those selections myself. That is a great privilege, one that I greatly appreciate. Just as I cannot praise your achievements highly enough.”
Klopp seeks the support of the DFB legends
The national team manager is thus trying to win over the DFB legends even before the restart. Klopp knows full well the influence that greats such as Lothar Matthäus or the 1990 and 2014 World Cup winners have on the national team’s public image – partly through their roles as TV pundits.
This is most evident in the concluding section. There, Klopp explicitly calls on the former international players to lend their support: “I would be delighted if you would continue to follow and support our national team as it embarks on a fresh start on the road to the 2028 European Championship. Because we are all the national team.”
