La Liga discussion

oh?

I would imagine they figure that what they get in sponsorship deals exceeds whatever they might lose w.r.t TV rights. Still madness though.

Also, They need to get players in to the club for the sponsors to show interest. Messi took care of that before but now it’s about building the next brand while still remaining competitive (which is where Auba/Lewa come in)

Their debts are enormous. The only clubs in world football with bigger debts are Chelsea (friendly loans from an illegally rich owner, which now seem to have been wiped out) and Spurs (new stadium). While barca’s revenue has been almost uniquely hit by Covid due to the way Camp Nou is reated as a tourist destination, the bulk of this is due to player spending. Many of whom have been a bust and already moved on. Taking some harsh measures to get the debt under control and get out from under the punitive La Liga spending rules is one thing. Doing it to continue down the path of buying expensive players is madness.

Almost certainly will end in disaster.

The Bayern manager has questioned how Barca can afford anyone.
They can only spend £4m to every £1m sold and they havent sold anyone on a big fee.

The estimates suggest that without factoring in increased value of the tv deal over the length of the contract, Barca will be losing at least e400 million over the length of the contract, and more depending on how much the value of the TV deal increases over that period. That means Barca are essentially paying around 16 million a year for 25 year years for help today getting out of league spending restrictions right now. You can maybe justify that but it also have to be acknowledged they have also sold 50% of their licensing company. Together, these are two sources of revenue that has put Barca on the financial platform they’ve had, and trading the long term revenue for that for short term investment is a big risk. Spending that money on expensive new players, especially ones in their 30s is madness.

One interpretation is they simply don’t see the risk the same way we do. A more cynical, likely realistic, interpretation is it is willingly trading for short term glory for the current board at the expense of pains they wont have to be around to answer for.

That’s not strictly true. Because of Covid the ratio was reduced to 3-1 for this year. More importantly though it applies to overall spending, not transfer spending. Getting players off their pay roll, or doing deals like they did with Umtiti to reduce their liability are more important that raising transfer revenue per se.

That said , for a Bayern mgr to be cribbing about being outspent is ironic.

Nahelsmann lost a lot of respect for me when he took the Bayern job… Missing the chance to be Klopp to be Pep… Despite him being in RBL.

Few clubs like that about, Spurs now talking about Maddison. I’m sure they posted debt and that stadium missed two years revenue.

That’s a minimum of a billion euro, at 40 million a year over 25 years, that’s going to be siphoned off out of the club, all for some up front cash that they’re spending on players.

If they are hit by a barren spell they are fucked. Leagues do generally rotate as the strongest so any strength in La Liga could hit them if other teams pick up.

Very big gamble.

A while back, it was said that Xavi had told five players they didn’t have to report back for pre-season training, and should focus on finding new clubs. Mingueza, Puig, Umtiti, Lenglet and Braithwaite.

Now according to Sport, the reason for this was he doesn’t think they have the ability to help increase the passing tempo of the team, which is a big priority for him.

This is pretty specific, and pretty ruthless. But interesting to get this sort of insight. Line in the sand: if you can’t do this, you’re out.

Interesting to note Castellanos is joining Girona, be interesting to see how the switch from MLS to La Liga goes but as centre forward strikers go I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up going higher in his career.

“In light of the possibility of signing Cristiano Ronaldo, if it is more than a simple rumour without any basis, we express our absolute rejection of his hypothetical joining of our club,” Atletico’s International Union of Fan Clubs (Union Internacional de Peñas Atletico de Madrid) said in a statement.

"The aforementioned player represents the antithesis of the values that constitute the hallmarks of our Atleti, such as the effort, generosity, modesty and humility of those who want to defend our values.

They forgot “rolling around on the pitch like they’ve been shot every time another player slightly brushes them.”

To be fair, Cristiano can do that with the best of Atleti.

Looks like she’s been using Barca’s tax advisors

Well she has always said the High Interest Products dont lie

Another piece of the furniture sold off to fund the arrival of another new player - Barca have now sold 25% of their TV production company for 100 million. That is now 25% of domestic tv revenue for the next 25 years, 50% of their licensing company, and now 25% of this additional subsidiary. they’re going to be able to register their new players, but they are now also going to be leaking a conservative estimate of e75 million a year in lost revenue as a result of selling these stakes.
