LFC Sporting Director thread

Just like Comolli got the sack for Carroll, and Downing, so should Hughes get the sack for Isak and selling Diaz and not replacing him and inadequately replacing Trent.

And apparently (I didn’t know this before) Hendo’s signing was a big negative to FSG and they held it against him. And we did nearly move him on. But Carrol and Downing purchases were pretty damning by themselves.

Yeah also brought us Edwards and Graham. He is (vomit in my mouth) the real godfather of the FSG success

Didn’t he buy Charlie Adam :face_with_peeking_eye:

We bought Adam however we didn’t pay for his left foot.

It started to feel like Hughes and Slot never used to have so much money to spend on players with their previous teams. With FSG backing, it like kids with money in hand walked into a candy store. They just went on a spending spree, not thinking of which candy they actually liked. Instead bought everything, including the puke flavour jellybean.

Ah the glorious CHAD and a 1 from 4 strike rate. Lets hope we don’t look back on our summer signings in the same light…

Or they ordered caviar because it was the most expensive thing on the menu, without realising that it is vile salty shite that no one actually needs.

Rodgers tried to swap Hendo for Fulham’s Demspey?

I saw Dempsey talking the other day, he got rested in a league game so he would be fit for the UEFA Cup game against Juventus. In response he claims he walked into the dressing room absolutely furious, said to the rest of the team “none of you motherfuckers are as good as me” then punched his hand through a window.

Imagine we traded Henderson’s attitude for that shit. What a moron.

I think the issue was that they got shafted on the fee. £20m was a lot of money back then, and I think Bruce came out afterwards and said they were surprised that Liverpool just said yes to their opening price. They had been privately expecting to settle around £10m.

I hope he goes soon. :frowning:

It was Rodgers who wanted to get rid of Hendo, we were lucky that Hendo dug his heels and stayed put.

To be honest, I think Rodgers gets a lot of unfair stick over that.

He wanted to bring in Clint Dempsey (god knows why) and Fulham offered to take Hendo - at that point a player on the edge of the squad. It’s not unreasonable to ask Hendo if he wanted to go and play for Fulham - there has been no suggestion he tried to force him out.

When Hendo said he wanted to stay and fight for his place, Rodgers certainly responded well to that, and by the end of the season he was a regular in midfield, a season later he was made vice captain, and the following year Rodgers made him captain.

About the most you could level at Brendan was that he didn’t see the potential Jordan had, but at the time I don’t think any of us predicted the career he would go on to have. Aside from that Rodgers man management of Hendo was pretty exemplary - he leveraged workrate and increasingly impressive performances, and rewarded him every step of the way with appearances and status within the squad.

There is a tendency with managers, when the tide turns and we’ve decided we hate them, to look back on everything they did through the prism of thinking they are a bellend - Slot is currently getting that treatment with some of his decisions last season. But it’s always a mix of good at bad, and unless you appoint someone like Mourinho, it’s rare that a coach is deliberately trying to fuck players over.

At the risk of derision, I’ll say that I don’t think Hendo goes on to have the career he had without Rodgers managing him - he supported his desire to stay even though it cost him his attacking target, pushed him to up his standards to win a place in the team and rewarded his progress every step of the way, right up to the highest status within a squad a manager can give on a player.

cf Elliot and Slot. Sliding doors moment last summer?

Except Elliott wanted to go, but yeah possibly.

It would be a very Liverpool thing to undertake that review and conclude that we need to pivot away from the Head Coach model and back to the manager the day after all the outstanding candidates have been tied down to other jobs.
