Seems that is old candidate in your mind only.
His signings will turn out to fine in my view.
Well bar Chiesa.
And Mamarashvili
Jury is out for me on him.
Ali and Caoimhín Kelleher had better coverage in front of them. Mamadashvilli right now has a porous defense in front, which would not help his confidence. Besides, Kelleher didn’t exactly covered himself in glory in yesterday’s match even though you may say he was unsighted for one of the goal conceded.
Ali simply world class. At his peak there was nobody who had a better combination of positioning, shot stopping, comfort in possession, and absolute out of the world distribution. Caoimhe’s positioning and game shot stopping may not be at the level of peak Ali, practically nobody is in the world game right now. But it’s still at a very high level. Kelleher is also and has always been a much better penalty stopper than Ali. That’s one thing that Ali was deficient at always. Mama in contrast lacks and practically every department compared to either Ali or even Kelleher except he may be a better shot stopper than Kweevee if the shot is anywhere near where he is positioned. This is irrespective of coverage in front of them because I remember how good Ali still was when we didn’t have Virgil and Gomez and Matip in that awful Covid season.
If we’re not gonna go back for Kelleher, then we need to go find someone else, because Mama is simply not good enough to be either a title keeper or Champions League challenging one. From me he’s an undeniable downgrade to what we used to have.
I’m still convinced that Wirtz and Ekitike are excellent signings for us. Frimpong is a bad signing and Isak needs more time. Mama, I’m not sure.
Hugo - absolutely. He’s the kind we usually go for where it’s relatively unknown but about to burst into a new phase of growth and improvement as a player and has always had all the raw materials to make him a formidable force..
Flo - undeniably gifted and already successful. Maybe he will work out but he is definitely not gonna work out under Slot. Currently doesn’t do what we need or is durable and robust enough for the Premier League. Doing something fancy on the ball near the halfway line isn’t really helping us win matches.
Alex - Let’s see what we bought after his both fully fit and fully match up. And even then we’ll only have probably a maximum of three years out of them given his age.
Frimpong, Kerkez - downgrades to what we used to have at fullback positions.
Mama - downgrade to what we used to have at goalkeeper position, even at no 2. This is particularly disappointing as we have been told for ages that Mama is the real deal.
He’s a slightly better Mignolet.
Robertson is spoken about as the best left back in our history. Let’s not beat Kerkez with that stick. He is a young player who has had a good season, and will only get better.
Same argument for Frimpong to be honest. He’s replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold, one of the best RBs in PL history. He’s a had few injuries and been messed around by having to switch position every other week and having less than adequate protection from midfield.
I think they’re both good players if we get them in a system that they are allowed to do what they are good at - scream down the flanks providing overlapping runs and creating overloads in the wide areas.

Agree with this. But in order to pass judgment on Hughes’ work, you have also to look at how much he laid out for these players.
Anyway, for me, the main thing is how as a DoF, he handles the head coach situation and how he adresses potential crises within the squad (as an exemple: the Salah spat last December). Much of his work is done in the shadows, but when a public crisis suddenly emerges, it’s probably the sign that he has previously missed something.

Nah..not for me… his defending at times was awful. Walker was a much better defender.
Walker was a much better defender.

Walker is the best English RB of all time.

Damn, what were the nerds thinking with Hughes and Edwards?
Problem is he did indeed win the title. Secondary I wish these places look link properly. As I know Ormstein posted this almost 2 months ago, it may remain the case it also could be coming from one source.
However the data can’t be showing much this time out. Maybe it’s suggesting players drop off is too much and thus conclusions are being reached on that.
My issue is not that much with the quality of the signings, its with the prices that were paid. We overpaid on every signing where there wasn’t a release clause. I also assume the SD is advising that we keep the manager.
