If the final candidate is an internal hiring, such as Woodfine, I am quite sure that he will work with Iraola to build the squad further based on both of their visions. However, if the SD is an external hire, will that person want to bring in his own head coach instead down the road (for example, not extending Iraola’s 2-year contract)?

I hope that FSG squash any idea that the SD should want to bring in their own coach. Sure they’d be involved in discussions re any change but they absolutely need to be able to work with AI (or anyone else who has the role). A SD that can’t do this should never get near the role.

These roles are hard to measure from the outside.

Of course, we could just look at transfers in his tenure in a black and white way and give our thoughts, but it’s not the reality or totality of things.

Some things are out of our control, there are circumstances, things that have been inherited, things that need more time, the coaching staff also influencing how good some moves were or what was needed, etc.

Do I think our squad planning left more question marks than you’d want? Yes. I spoke about it around a year ago. Some question we still haven’t answered and are working on them.

Post Klopp it seemed that we found stability in all roles from top to bottom, but it quickly proved not to be the case. I understand these things are not as long term as they might used to be, but we’re craving for some longer stability in that role.

Hopefully we get it right whoever is next.

I’ll believe the actions. Of course he wouldn’t publicly acknowledge a personality clash. We know they had a difference of opinions about which player to buy and which to give new contracts to. It didn’t make a whole lot of sense when Edwards left. Klopp was exerting more influence and Edwards probably felt undermibed

Eswards left because he was ambitious and wanted to do more than his role allowed for at the time.

I think it’s a mix of both.

Edwards did make good hires but his importance is also overstated too.

Yes , he did convince klopp to get Salah on but it’s also to do with the manager to improve the player as well.
