Lionel Messi- where next?

Someone should let the media, pundits and commentators know that then.
Estonia versus Iceland, and they’ll get a reference to '66 into the commentary somehow

What about Oliver Kahn. At least as good as Neuer?

Casillias despite his rather poor last years and Buffon also are up there with Neuer , Kahn.

None of them would be in the GOAT category of keepers though

He didn’t say that though, he said the English.

Funnily enough, he sprang to mind when I made that post. Kahn’s legacy was somewhat tarnished by the 2002 World Cup final and for that reason, I think, his name doesn’t really come up when goalkeepers are up for debate.

Well I wasn’t referring to the French or Dutch media, pundits and commentators.

Yet he was an absolute beast in that tournament. Won the Golden Ball he was so good. One howler can’t undo it.

I thought Khan was one of the best goalkeepers I ever watched.

Ok you win, those commentators represent the whole English nation.

Can’t agree, Kahn was very good as a shot stopper, but Neuer in his prime was equally good plus the qualities on the ball, more mobile etc.

Didn’t mention Neuer but he isn’t as good as Khan in that fundamentals and he really is starting to show age.

He was the best for some time no doubt, Casillas was also at one point the best as well. I always looked at him a fair bit when I was growing up.

Lost a bit of a respect for him with those comments recently.

No, you didn’t but others made that comparison, Kahn vs Neuer. All just opinion. It’s just that mine is correct.

Yeah, no doubt who was better in my opinion.

Subjective liking/disliking aside (I do like both of them), Neuer is the best I’ve seen in my following.

Kahn could get mentioned in a lower bracket, while Neuer edges it as the best among the best in his generation.

Think Neuer once said he might accept a 3rd division offer if they would be willing to play him at CB.

I’d subscribe to watching that, if possible. Maybe even move to Germany for a year!

You gotta give Kahn the style points for being an ogre born in the Black Forest and raised by wolves. It’s like saying one can’t consider Alisson (who is somewhat Kahn like in his own Brazilian way) Becker’s stylish mustache versions in determining his place among today’s keepers. You have to look at the entire package.

Stats never tell the entire story.

Christ, imagine how highly rated Big Nev would have been without his negative style points

Why has Big Nev got a spare match ball tucked under his shirt… :0)

Yeah, I mean, with keepers it’s very, very difficult to determine a GOAT, even if you believe in GOATs (I do not). So many good keepers playing in many different circumstances and styles of play.

One of my faves is Jorge Campos, Mexican keeper from the 80s/90s. Held the top spot for El Tri for quite a while. At just 5’7" perhaps the best keeper per vertical inch in recent memory.

Yeah, he’s German by descent afterall.
Also referred to as “The German” in his previous club. :slightly_smiling_face:

Never really got to see Neville in his Prime just his later years.

Reina for a couple of years was top of the field. It’s an odd position to play if you can stay relatively at the top for most of your career you have done well.

I do wonder if Alisson has blossomed at the right time. Young keepers will have highs and lows. Most players will but if you lose your form as a keeper than can be it. I think De Gea is a perfect example of that, kind of got lucky that his team was worse than him at that time.

He always looked like he was smuggling tyres, but Christ he was good.
