About time.

This is going well. Conceded the third most set piece goals and one of only 3 teams yet to score from a set piece

Err isn’t a free kick a set piece? Pretty sure I remember Dom Szobozlai hitting a belter.

Though wondering what some of these appointments are doing that we made in the summer.

So, uh, has Giovanni van Bronckhorst brought anything to this side? I know Heitinga was considered a vital member of the coaching staff last year, especially with helping Slot and Husloff adapt the the Prem. But I haven’t seen any indication that GVB has had a meaningful impact this far.

Then again, I admit that it’s likely that any impact he’s had wouldn’t be evident unless you were close to the team.

Would be interesting to know everything what Briggs is doing now.

It was reported last season that the football department was highly satisfied with his capture. Obviously Gio was brought in to replace Heitinga.

But from this season, set-pieces are Briggs’ new or added responsibility. Under Klopp, it was Krawietz’s task.

Let’s see how the season progresses, but this is an area where we might have to get it right with an individual or more people taking care of set-pieces.

Sorry, ‘one of only three Premier League teams yet to score from a corner or indirect free-kick this season’

Stretching the dimensions a bit to fit now

I think the point is that corners and indirect frees are common and well planned and executed routines are reliably getting goals for all those other teams. Scoring from a direct free kick ala Dom is not something you can rely upon.

That free kick yea perhaps but free kicks in and around the box are still as dangerous as corners.

If he sends it in the box and VVD heads it in then it’s classed the same as the scorcher he scored from 30 yards. How many direct free kicks are still used as indirect to score?

Just seems a bit of a fudge to make a point, any how the biggest improvement last night was the way we defended set pieces.

Who is responsible for the poor condition of the players? He can go too, and while we’re at it… :innocent:

I was wondering whether there would be a change soon in that set-piece department.

The word last season with Briggs’ in another role was that the club are really happy with his appointment/work… but there you go, people come and go, it’s normal.

Obviously set-pieces take time, this is certainly not something that will change over night. Ironically, you have time to train it, but to see serious improvement can take time.

It’s a phase in which we lacked a little bit last season, but this season’s standard has been really poor.

Well that’s been the case for at least a decade.

Anyhow the change looks like a fudge but with the situation as it is and the way it’s been so important this season (and we aren’t the only ones who look crap at it, both Villa and Palace looked poor this weekend on them).

Can’t all be pinned on one man, but sometimes change is a good thing, so I see it as a positive - of course, never nice to see someone lose their job. Time will tell if there’s an upturn in our defending and attacking metrics from set pieces. Given we now have some pretty big lads in the squad, you’d expect much much more.

Simple, you have a job and a role and if you aren’t producing the goods, and the numbers don’t lie, both defensively and offensively, then you can’t be expected to keep your job.

Hardly the only one to blame for our set piece form, but when the team is bad at attacking and defending set pieces and you’re the set piece coach, the buck has to stop somewhere.

We should get Adam Lallana back to organise practice matches against the 1st team.
