Liverpool FC - Pre-season (Part 2)

Perhaps but I think fans will really not be happy if we have another season like the last and especially if we finish 5th or 6th, which could happen.

There is some pressure on him, as there always is at Liverpool.

Jacquet, Munoz and Araujo. So far so good. I like all three, in their respective contexts, but clearly we have more business to do.

Barcola and Mbaye please! Hopefully we see movement on that as PSG sign their replacements.

Doue at right back has also expressed an interest. Get it done!

Then let’s see on a midfielder, probably depending on outgoing.

Tick-tock. Three signings done. Decent business. But we need more, with Barcola seemingly the main man we are going for, so hopefully that pays off.

Agree with all that, though I personally think we’ll only see a CM signed if both Jones AND Mac are sold, and while I see the first going to Inter - right now it just seems a matter of time - I don’t think Mac will go (yet).

As it stands, if Jones goes, Nyoni will take on his CM minutes, and I’m happy with that scenario.

11 days until we KO the Prem season and we are woefully short. This summer up until has been a disaster.

What’s the matter mate, never worn a butt hat before? They’re all the rage round my way.

If you look at what we have to replace from last year it is along the lines of
Ibou → Jacquet
Robbo → Kostas
Mo → Munoz
Gomez → Araujo (kind of)
Hugo → Isak (again, kind of)
No one → Leoni

Those changes probably aren’t enough to make us title contenders, but I think they are more than adequate at replacing the versions of the players we had last year (said with acknowledgement that the 3 who left had become shadows of the players they used to be) .

So I say those moves put us at least at Par of last year’s 3rd place finish, then how do we improve further? Well, there is a ton of room for that, nay expectation for that, just from looking at what is already at the club. A new manager with improved ideas and new motivations for the players, familiarization of Wirtz to the challenges of the league, Cody getting off the funk of last year, the continued maturation of Trey and Rio. I think most people would be disappionted if a fit and firing Isak was only as good as Hugo was last year, even accounting for how exciting Hugo himself was. The long shot potential of Baj to do something (I havent even mentioned Harvey because the Wrexham game radicalized me about how far he has fallen).I think that is a situation that just needs patience, not 3 to 4 additional signings. I really think Araujo fills a huge gap and with that done the situation looks a LOT better. I’m looking at additional signings as things that potentially tip us over the edge not essentials. Its at the point of wanting to improve the quality of the players on the borders of even making the match day squad (Endo and Chiesa) that ripples all the way through the squad rather than needing a player to be comfortable about the first XI sort of situation. I suspect Hughes et all feel the same and is why we’re being patient.

Completely share your frustration.

And as @Kopstar mentioned, it’s almost as if they’re pleased with themselves by being able to obfuscate a transfer, as if that’s an end in itself as opposed to a means to an end. The Araujo signing could be great but I have the same doubts that @Limiescouse mentioned about getting the prime version of him will take time and in the meantime we have literally zero cover for them.
We knew about Conor, Leoni and Jacquet’s physical state and recovery schedule MONTHS ago. Konate leaving was always a possibility. Is this the best we could have done?

We also knew that Salah was leaving ages ago. And we get the prospect Munoz (for the other flank)…and we are dragging along in this Barcola tug of war. And who knows what’s going to happen with Mbaye.

Disappointing to say the least.

If we get those three, and don’t sell anyone we expect to get regular game time, I think we’re good. I’d be very happy with that.

There’s always more that can be done, but those three deals would leave us in a good place.

The only thing missing for me would be a dedicated Isak backup. But, we’d have a good number of attackers, and crucially enough wingers to use Barcola central at times, maybe also Gakpo.

If Endo or someone else sticks around as the 5th midfielder, we also have good numbers there. That’s assuming Jones gets his move and Nyoni takes his role, getting a good number of games.

Edit: why is the quote thing failing me…

Yeah that’s a mad one. 25th March it was announced and they’ll have known even earlier than that.

Diomande was always going to be difficult but I’ve no problem with them trying and getting beaten out. But then you’ve got to know where you go next and move on that sharpish. Cracking on for five months we’ve known we’ll have this hole to fill.

Either they’re supremely confident on Barcola to the point it’s all but announced or they’re playing a very dangerous game with a club who could probably keep him next year without too much fuss or worry about him getting limited playing time or his value decreasing.
