An Oakley Cannonier hat-trick fired Liverpool U18s to a 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace in their opening game of the Premier League Cup on Saturday.

The 17-year-old striker continued a rich vein of form to take his goal tally to nine in just five competitive appearances this season.

Cannonier’s first-half pair, followed by an emphatic third in the second period, was just enough for the young Reds to keep a spirited Palace side at bay at the Academy.

Cannonier was on the mark within the opening 10 minutes after a good run down the right from the returning Isaac Mabaya. Melkamu Frauendorf provided the assist before Cannonier found the bottom corner.

Harvey Blair was looking lively and forced a good save from Owen Goodman in the visitors’ goal, while the ’keeper also got his angles right when Luke Chambers blasted at goal from a narrow angle.

Hesitation in the home defence almost allowed a Palace equaliser but Jadan Raymond’s effort was too high.

Most of the play was in the Palace half, however, and when Frauendorf slid in Blair, it took another good save to deny the Reds a second.

It did arrive 10 minutes from the interval, though, and it was all down to a spirit of adventure from centre-back Stefan Bajcetic.

The Spaniard saw space in front of him and carried the ball from well within his own half before drilling a shot low on goal. Goodman could only parry and Cannonier showed his striking instincts to pick up the loose ball and slot home.

It looked like Liverpool might continue their dominance with the first second-half action seeing the overlapping Chambers find Bobby Clark in the box, but his shot was deflected wide.

But Palace found a route back into the game with 50 minutes gone, a cross from the left headed home by Jadan Raymond.

The visitors grew in confidence and began to exert some pressure but it looked like it would all be in vain when Cannonier completed his hat-trick with just over 20 minutes left.

James Balagizi stole the ball high and when he squared it inside, Cannonier rifled a shot past Goodman with the confidence of a striker at the top of his game.

The two-goal advantage was restored for just three minutes, however, with Palace grabbing a second in almost identical fashion to their first. The cross from the left was this time headed home by the towering Ademola Ola-Adebomi.

Both sides had chances in the last 15 minutes, Fabian Mrozek making a key save when Balagizi lost the ball in midfield, and Blair firing over at the other end.

Fittingly, though, it was Cannonier who came closest, latching on to a fine ball from Frauendorf and rounding the 'keeper before being brought down just outside the box when he looked likely to add to his tally.

Palace pressed but the young Reds defended stoutly to preserve their win, with Chambers impressive at left-back in several one-on-one situations.

If klopp has him in his plans for Tuesday he might start and come off half time. :astonished:

No Gordon or Bradley. Must be in for Norwich. Especially Bradley as Trent may be rested and Neco is injured. Can’t imagine Millie playing there again.

2-0 down HT. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Quick scan of the squads from today and yesterday do indeed suggest only Gordon and Bradley will be involved on Tuesday from the youth sides.

Corness and Morton came off at half time so possible they could be on the bench on Tuesday.

Reckon it was more a tactical sub to get more physicality in the midfield rather than rest them. We have been well done 4-0. The scouser Gelhart taking the piss at this stage. Just hit one from 35 yards out top bins

Cracking pen save from Pitugla

Barry Lewtas’ side suffered their second loss in the division this season as goals from Joe Gelhardt (two), Amari Miller and Pascal Struijk gained three points for the visitors.

Having seen the seniors and the U18s clinch victories on Saturday, the U23s kicked off hoping to complete a treble and bounce back from their defeat at Tottenham Hotspur last week.

The hosts found themselves up against a powerful Leeds line-up, however, and fell behind with 13 minutes on the clock.

After the away team snatched possession in the middle of the park, Gelhardt spotted a chance to try his luck from around 45 yards with Marcelo Pitaluga out from his goalline.

The Liverpool goalkeeper got a touch to the Leeds man’s attempted lob but could not prevent the ball from finding the net for 1-0.

A crucial block by Tony Gallacher later stopped a potential second as Sean McGurk spun in the box, before the Reds came close to an equaliser.

Billy Koumetio dispatched a pass over the top of the opposition defence for Tyler Morton to run on to and the midfielder’s own attempt at a lob drew an excellent save from Kristoffer Klaesson.

And Leeds instead doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time, Gelhardt making ground along the right flank and teeing up Miller to beat Pitaluga from a tight angle.

Lewtas sought to freshen things up by introducing both Morgan Boyes and Elijah Dixon-Bonner from the bench at the outset of the second half.

The latter almost helped to reduce Liverpool’s arrears on 52 minutes as his free-kick from the left was flicked on to an unmarked Koumetio, who headed over from close range.

Pitaluga made a brilliant save to keep out Stuart McKinstry’s volley as the hour mark arrived, but Leeds were celebrating again within seconds – Struijk headed home from the resulting corner to stretch their advantage to 3-0.

Next, Gelhardt repeated his trick from the first half with an outstanding long-range strike into the top corner, this time from a distance of 35 yards.

Mateusz Musialowski could have registered a consolation for Liverpool when found in space by James Norris’ cross but dragged his effort wide of the goal.

And the Reds were grateful to Pitaluga for denying the visitors a fifth from the penalty spot. Gelhardt was fouled by Boyes inside the box but saw his kick stopped by Pitaluga to keep the deficit to four on a frustrating day in Kirkby.

Liverpool U23s: Pitaluga, Gallacher, Beck, Clayton, Koumetio, Corness (Boyes, 46), Morton (Dixon-Bonner, 46), Norris, Bearne, Woltman, Musialowski.

Unused substitutes: Hughes, Wilson.

Terence Miles has signed his first professional contract with Liverpool FC.

The 17-year-old local player, who has been with the Reds since U7 level, made his U18s debut last season as an U16 when impressing at centre-back on several occasions.

A good reader of the game, he steps out confidently with the ball from the back and distributes well.

Miles’ versatility has also been highlighted this season as he started in midfield in several games, scoring versus Manchester United and assisting against Nottingham Forest.

He also made his Papa John’s Trophy debut last month when he came off the bench against Rochdale.
