Everything that has come from people claiming to speak to Liverpool’s perspective says it is a straight “not for sale” position

Obviously that is always conditional and at some point there is an offer that could sway us, like it did for Phil. But it the seems the clubs that are interested are so because they sniff an opportunity rather than because he (or Cody) is the guy they want to base their success next season. Those two things suggest a low likelihood that someone will put up the money required to test our “not for sale” positioning.

I lke Diaz a lot. But the chance to get a younger player for that money has to be tempting.

Let’s remember, that our entire transfer philosophy is based on the perspective that about 50% of transfers fail and even the best process in the world can only mitigate the risk of something going wrong. Ian Graham on his recent media tour was still extoling the virtues of going for Naby and even accepting that it didnt work out insists there are no lessons to be learned. Shit just sometimes happens.

That should put into perspective what it means to try to sell an important player and seamlessly upgrading him with that money on a younger players. It has the hallmarks of trying to be too clever and liking the smell of our own farts and its why I dont think this is what we’re thinking.

Diaz is a good player and I hope he stays. It looks to me as though he wants a pay bump, and he might value himself more highly than we value him. If I’m reading that wrong, and he is happy to stay on his current deal, great! I would gladly take that.

The following is based on the premise that he wants out. How would we replace him?

I would think about the aggregate, not the individual player.

Diaz got 13 goals and 5 assists in 36 Prem appearances. He had a good season and I hope he stays. But let’s imagine a world where there is a lot of change in our attack.

In the scenario I’m describing Diaz is sold - we didn’t especially want to do that, but he wanted a bigger pay deal than we were giving him, so we reluctantly parted company. In addition, as I’m talking about the aggregate, Nunez is sold. We are expecting that one. He got 5 goals and 2 assists. Chiesa is also sold. Most expect that, but with the other changes there’s a chance he might make a case for himself in preseason. Either way, he barely featured last season so improving on what he did should not be difficult. Jota is tragically gone. He got 6 goals and 3 assists.

That’s four out. Diaz. Nunez. Chiesa. Jota.

Four to replace them could be Wirtz, Ekitike, Fofana and Ngumoha who would be promoted from within. They are not exact like for like players, and that’s because Slot is shaping it to his requirement, so we shouldn’t necessarily expect to see the same set up as last season.

I would be confident that even in the first season, when things are new and the replacements are young, the incoming players would better the contribution of the outgoing players, and the attack would be more than fine.

In subsequent seasons I would expect them to do better again, as they are young and have years of improvement ahead of them.

Again, I would be more than fine if Diaz stays as he is a good player. But if he does leave, I would think about the aggregate, rather than replacing one individual player. I think it is likely Slot will play a different system this coming season as we evolve.

I see four at the back, but the two fullbacks getting high up the pitch and offering width.
I see the same three midfielders as playing most weeks - MacAllister, Grav and Szobo with Grav able to drop back and cover if the fullbacks are high up and we lose possession.
I see two in front of them in the half space, Wirtz left of center, Salah right of center.
And I see a new striker in front of that, Ekitike.

I still expect Chiesa stays now to be honest but yeah losing Nunez, Diaz and sadly Jota.

As I said I think this is mouth pieces and player playing a wage game.

We won’t be accepting that.

Much of this stinks of shit-stirring.

Whether that be on his behalf to try and push up contract negotiations;

Or on others to try and and unsettle him and us;

I hope it all passes and he stays (with a pay rise if that’s what it takes).

He’s a good player and I like him in Red.

Before Jota, I thought one more forward (either a striker or a left winger) and go into next season with 5.

Since Jota, it’s possible that there might be two. Pressure is now likely to be on more of a central player.

On Diaz, my wish has increased in wanting him to stay (even if we don’t agree a new contract, which might be part of the issue if he tries to “force” a move).

But as we speak now, I can’t pretend that I’m 100% convinced he’ll stay.

Who knows, just have to be patient and see what happens.

I thought he had already agreed terms last week. Whoever is pushing it is showing a lot of disrespect to be honest considering we’ve done nothing since Jota and Hughes and Edwards as well as Hogan have been attending those events.

I still think it’s a play for a new wage. But come on, you’ll sign for a club but can I have a release clause in case you can’t register me because you’re skint.

Do they think we are offloading these players for nothing?

Reports circulating that Bayern have bid 52m for Diaz. Which is a laughable figure in this market. It would cost the club 80M+ to replace him, in all likelihood. Bayern will have to bring up their offer considerably to even warrant a response.

Is Ben Jacobs reliable? If so, that’s a very strong statement. It’s not over, but this moves me to the other side of the line and I’d now say it is more likely Diaz stays than leaves this summer.

He is a good player and we should rightly be happy to keep him. I could easily see a gentleman’s agreement to allow him to go for £40-45M next summer, but in the meantime he gives us another season and gives us one less piece of business we have to do in the remainder of the window.

We need a striker, assuming Nunez leaves. My guess is Ekitike.
We need a central defender since Quansah left. My guess is Guehi, possibly Lukeba if Palace are greedy on the fee.

There also might be a Konate headache brewing if there is any credence to him being open to leaving this summer. So that would be another central defender needed.

So that’s 2, maybe 3 more signings, and presumably a few exit deals to be worked out as well.

Diaz is a headache we could do without right now, and while I’m far from certain he stays, the strong statement has moved the dial for me and in a changeable situation, I’d now say it is more likely he stays this summer. Still, it’s silly season and anything can happen.
