He was shit according to City fans 10 days ago, whilst Wirtz was the perfect KDB replacement.
This week however, Cherki’s seemingly become elite and Wirtz has gone to shit.

Reckon Pepijin thinks he’s got a chance of the City job. Especially if they are relegated and Pep leaves
Unlikely. Hes tried and failed at being the main man.

That’s like what, 7/8 signings in the last 6 months? I wonder if the “punishment” will be - at worst - a transfer ban right after they’ve basically bought a new team, oh what an incredible coincidence that would be, wouldn’t it?
Maybe not the City job but a path like Arteta or similar.
He did the Arteta path already, under Klopp, and then went on to try and be the main man at NEC Nijmegen, which lasted a mere 4 months, before he came to to us. He then tried the top job at RB Salzburg, and was set free in 5 months last season.
He’s a very very good coach. I don’t think he’s got it in him to be a leader. I guess that is to some extent the same as Arteta, who I think is a pretty avg leader.
I know Lijnders’ path, was just joking because of the few recent coaches under Pep who went on to succeed.
Lijnders can be pretty relaxed I think. He doesn’t have to know now exactly what he wants to do in the future. He can try again one day as the main man and succeed or fail. Or he can stay as an assistant. He will see with time.
When you have a team like City in for you, that means your stock is still very high and there is no need to worry or panic.
Who’s succeeded, just out of interest?
Kompany arguably - but he’s shooting fish in a barrel. Think he’s probably going to end up in charge at City eventually. He did do well at Burnley, but once he came to the PL he was god awful with no ability to adjust tactics to fit his team. It’s why I’ve always wondered if Pep could do it at a club that isn’t Barca, Bayern, or City (i.e. rich, best players in the work, no huge challenges).
100 agree that Ljinders can be relaxed - he’s got a great job. Shame he’s happy to work for that organisation. Was meant to mean more.
A few of the recent ones, who don’t have to go back to being assistants like “tomorrow”. Kompany, Arteta, Maresca.
I rate that as a success in becoming a head coach, I’m not saying that they are winners or serial winners already.
That’s different to Lijnders’ path so far, I’m sure he would love to earn the opportunity to get an Arsenal, Bayern or Chelsea.
That seems the obvious now. If they were to be given a points deduction it will be something they can easily over come, has to be more by Everton which will mean about 12pts.
Rafa before landing the Valencia job
Valladolid - sacked after 20 games while bottom of the league
Ossasuna - Sacked after only 1 win in 10 games in the second division
Extremadura - got them promoted from the second divsion, but then resigned after leading them to immediate relegation the following season.
I’m not saying he won’t be able to do it. I’m saying I think he hasn’t got the minerals for the top job.
No doubt there are examples that show people can come good, and other examples where people fail miserably at the highest levels.
The matching of club and coach, and a joint direction of travel is the most important thing ultimately. Its why Pep does well where he does well, and its why Klopp did well where he did well.
Some aspects of Lijnders are impossible for me to judge from the outside why exactly it didn’t work out for him so far as the main man. It’s been two attempts at different stages (6 years difference). Klopp once said that the NEC job was a too difficult one. We’ll see in the future.
Even acknowledging how little as we know them as people or get to see how they work, I am inclined to agree. I just think that people who are inclined to give highly rated coaches a chance to transition into management are going to continue to consider Pep as long as his reputation remains high enough that jobs like being City’s number 2 come his way.
Someone mention minerals ?
Obviously I’m only speculating, but he strikes me as someone who is incredibly knowledgable about the game, but isn’t particularly relatable. To be blunt, he comes across as a bit of a geek. That might be OK as an assistant. But I don’t think the charisma he needs to command the attention and respect of players is there.
He comes across as a vain idiot, IMHO. Writing a book about us while still putting out the cones was an awful move and he shot his mouth off in pressers and other places in a most unhelpful way. Strikes me less as a ‘geek’ and more like an annoying little yappy dog that makes a lot of noise whenever anything goes past but does fuck all when someone goes onto the property. To use Jose’s language he’s the ‘deluded one’ or a specialist in failure who is just hoping some cheaty oil stench will rub off on him.
I think he’s a bit of both of what @Mascot and @dalglish set out, which is why he’s best placed as a behind the scenes assistant manager/coach.
@dalglish This repeated spiteful and dismissive description of someone who was clearly rated and valued by Klopp doesnt reflect well on you.
