Yeah, but the other 99.9 % of regular football players would’ve made an announcement after the last game of the season. He could’ve easily still picked up that phone to the PIF and said, do you fancy going for a game of golf?
The club have been respectful all the way here! And as a consequence don’t receive any transfer income, no going back now obviously, I was hoping there was still some common sense between the divide.
Yeah I’ve just re-read it and can see that you were referring to the obvious being stated in the journalist’s article.
On a side tangent - It is a real shame though that Salah denies the club money in because Slot dropped him during the period of so many losses last year where tactically Slot wasn’t getting anything right no matter what.
If it does fathom out it was a direct personal issue with Slot that justified his decision to cancel his own signed contract and leave on a free. Then in that failed relationship he’s not even hurting or getting revenge on Slot for the coach’s inabilities. He’s ensuring the club has no profiting to be made as a Saudi club surely would have exceeded €42m. The Brighton game was the 31st match out of 38 for the season. We hadn’t played Man City or PSG by then.
Therefore I can only believe that his non relationship with Slot was the absolute factor in December.
Yet, the relationship with the club was the absolute factor in March. Otherwise he could simply wait for 7 more games.
So these reporters, when they put stuff out there, probably need to see the 50/50 first before running down one direction on it.
First of all, if he has no interest in living in Saudi Arabia, why should he move there just to generate a fee for our club.
Secondly, who says any interested club would be looking to pay a fee for him anyway, knowing that he’ll be 34, his performances have dropped significantly and Liverpool would be wanting to get his not insignificant wage off the wage bill?
Everyone knows Saudi clubs pays something for players on their way out. They paid us more than zero for Henderson and Fabinho.
They had no choice on this part, if it’s revealed to be true? - (that he tore up his own contract solely because of the relationship break down with Slot.)
The timing of this report does sound like a load of shit stirring right before a massive game. I don’t know anything about this joyce but if it’s Salah’s agent pushing this then it still doesn’t make much of an impact on Slot, only effects the club negatively.
Hendo was 32, he was still largely performing and his salary expectations were much lower than Mo’s. Liverpool wanted him to stay. El Attifiq paid us 14m euros for him at a time the Saudi clubs were splashing money around.
Much of this doesnt apply with Mo.
If the club allowed him a contract where he could walk away from it freely and of his choosing, then that again suggests they never expected to get a fee for him once he signed it.
Given his performances, and particularly his pre Afcon behaviour, i dont think anyone expected the club to keep him beyond the summer so rather than one side tearing up the contract it’s likely to have been a mutual decision
Is Mo Salah worth 400k per week to the club? Nope. Not the current version of Mo, who is now quite a bit past peak.
Ideally we would get a transfer fee but we are sort of at a stalemate with that, as Mo is well within his right to stay until the end of his deal.
So we will get the wages off the books and create a space for at least one exciting new winger.
From a financial perspective the peak time to sell was 2 years ago, when 150M was on the table (assuming Mo was open to the move). We said no, and then Mo went and had a brilliant season, and we won the title in no small part due to his significant contribution.
So the way I see it is all’s fair in love and war. Everyone has done well out of the arrangement. And now we will give Mo a fitting send off.
Edit
And in an age of kiss and tell, when the temptation is there to throw a few zingers in after the fact, my hope is Mo, and everyone else, will stay classy. Arguably, keeping your yapper shut might have been a requirement of the agreement to let him break his contract and leave on a free.
Getting 400k a week off your books is the equivalent of 20m added to the balance sheet. As you say, you dont extend a 33 year old on the expectation of getting a transfer fee at the end of it
I was going to go into a long dissection of what it meant for the future of the club and all involved, but I thought I’d check its veracity before going to the trouble.
for me, Mo has performed better since announcing his intention to leave after this season, its like a huge weight has been lifted of shoulders,
it makes me wonder, if he is really too old to play at this level or does he feel lifted knowing that what whatever caused his drop in form will soon be in the past!
