Naby KEITA: 2020/21

What formation were they playing and which position did he play?

My livescore had it as a diamond 4 in midfield, with Naby at the tip of it.

Doesn’t have to. He didn’t go to the red listed Namibia.

Oh? I thought I read that he still had to isolate himself for seven days. My wrong then.

All Naby can entice Daka with is an in-depth analysis of our fitness and recovery centre.

Hope he is not remembered as Harry Kewell mark 2. There is so much he can offer this team. If he gets injured again I will scream.

He is a fantastic player and perhaps the best midfielder we have since Gerrard. I really, really, hope that he has a great career with us.

This was me just when we signed him and after pre-season and a few games.

He is genuinely a top class player when on the pitch but I don’t think it can work here.

Klopp has one of the most physically punishing set up in football and the Premier League is one of the most physically demanding and combative leagues.

I think he may be more fancied than people think and if he get somewhere a bit more physically laid back under a playing set up that’s not as intense we may be getting told how we made a “mistake” letting him go in quick order. He could well be world class elsewhere.

Yeah.

There’s no doubt for me that he’s a high quality and complete little midfielder. The game in Denmark aside, you see it immediately when he steps onto the pitch even after weeks/months out.

But
both; his ceiling in this team and league (physical demands) and actual availability for longer periods, that might prevent him from having the career he should have with us.

All that leads to the probability of him staying here for maybe one more season, still good enough to keep considering the age of other players, but ultimately it might not be the success we all thought it would be when we signed him.

He’s part of 9(!) of our senior players whose contracts are expiring in 2023. Important year of decision making ahead of us.

I think we sell this summer due to his value, what has been used to buy him, the wages he is on and the sheer number of players we either have to extend their contracts or sell in the next two years to see some form of fee. The funds from him, Ox and Shaqiri moving on could fund a freshening up of centre and attacking midfield. With Jones, Henderson, Fabinho and Thiago joined by Elliott and possibly even Wilson I don’t actually think we need extensive numbers adding. Maybe two hot younger talents like Camavinga and Gravenberch to use as examples to bring some size, physicality, energy and youthfulness into the midfield to replace Wijnaldum and Keita whilst Elliott and Wilson pretty much replace Ox and Shaqiri. That would help create significant room on the wage bill too which will be needed to extend some of those other deals set to expire in 2023.

Yeah, value is imoportant, but you have to have a willing buyer on certain terms. That’s why it’s not all in our court this summer. We still don’t know what we’re qualified for next season (or not at all). All that slows down the process of our summer dealings, which will also have Euro’s. We’ll see, but so far
I have a feeling Keita might stay for one more season (Ox to leave) and then we make the decision.

The timing is shit though. Trying to sell a player in a compressed market is no easy task. Especially if you’re trying to minimise the hit you’re likely to take.

It’ll be shit next year too. Assuming we still want to move him on next year it’ll be because he still hasn’t kicked on. That’s another season of disappointing performances to put off buyers and another season further away from his good performances putting them even further from mind. He’ll also be in the last 12 months of his contract. I don’t see us getting more for him in summer 2022 than summer 2021, a very faint possibility that he’s kicked on but in that case we’d be keeping him. If he’s going to be sold its better this summer when that money may get us more in terms of buying new players to come in than in 2022 when our money may not stretch as far. Only reason for me to keep him past this summer is hope/belief he will still work out and be here for the long term. If we are going to have him move on I prefer this summer over next.
