Naby KEITA: 2020/21

I’d be interested to judge him after a season of full fitness but it’s not likely to happen

We have had glimpses of that but nothing consistent which could be down to his injury record or that he’s just a flash in the pan, anyones guess.

For 53million or whatever it was you want more than a player who can turn it on 2-4 games per season

That’s clear and understood!

Was doomed as soon as he got the no 8. In hindsight, he’s was not mentally strong enough to have that burden as well.

Tielemans would be a strong Gini replacement.

OTOH, the direct counterpart of Keita in Leicester City is Maddison.

This whole situation depresses me so much because it seemed like such a perfect match.

I dont watch much German football but I saw a Leipzig game during his first season there in which he was dynamite. He looked like everything we wanted in a midfielder, but didn’t think too much of it. Literally the next week I read a piece on him earmarking him as a potential super star. A week later I read a piece on Mane and how much a hero he is to younger players all over Western Africa not just Senegal. In my mind I invented this thing in which Naby viewed himself as Sadio’s younger brother and that would be the reason he’d pick us to join. And then it started happening. It was all too perfect. And then he got here

Do you think we’ll ever get to the point we we retire shirts?

The number 7 and 8 have a certain aura around them and it feels like a player picking either of those shirts is setting themselves up to fail.

The last two sevens have been alright.

I don’t like the idea of retiring shirts.

Only in really extreme and very rare situations, I can understand.

But life goes on and I don’t like limiting future big players wearing those shirts.

There are other ways to remember them without messing with the present and future.

That’s my point… I don’t think we should but I suppose it comes down to the player who takes the number.

I wonder if Naby knew about the number 8 or if it was explained to him

You’d like to think so but :man_shrugging:t2:

Plus is we retire number 7 what will Mbappe wear

I wouldn’t want to, there have been far too many legends that have shared numbers.

I do think number should be taken away from players if they don’t do at least partial justice to the number.

Keita should be given 108.

A good next year from Jones, give it to him, assuming Keita is still a squad player.

we should ask Grobbelaar to take a piss on the shirts!

His first game for us against West Ham where we beat them 3-0 or 3-1 was his best, injuries since have left him a bit part player, I have no doubt like Matip that a full season would show him to be an excellent player but if he can’t pick it straight up off the back of an injury then he isn’t worth keeping

One of our most talented players but held back by injury.

I’m thinking mental fragility as well.

Come on now…he did a great turn vs Palace away…but yeah, those 2 moments are his 3 year highlights.

Big goals against Southampton, Porto and Salzburg are some of his highlights, as well as the performance against Chelsea before we lifted the league title. With a bit more luck he’d have won us the Leicester (pen) or West Ham (assist for Origi chance last minute) games which would have won us the league title in 18/19 had all things else stayed the same.

I get that everyone is disappointed with him but pretending he’s done nothing at all here is a bit odd.
