Nathaniel PHILLIPS: 2021/22 (on loan at Bournemouth)

They were both shit.

So the less shit one, who is certainly not Kabak, should start, and we did not even try Davies, a proper LCB, yet.

Yeah, maybe. Phillips was crap though. Useless once Everton stuck the ball in behind.

Sure heā€™ll be touted as the savour again though.

I certainly agree about Kabak but I thought Nat did well enough. He at least has some defensive instinct about him. Kabak putā€™s me in mind of how Rich (R.I.P) used to describe Lovern, ā€œA kid running round with a bucket on his headā€.
He shits himself on the lead up to the ā€œpenaltyā€.

His positioning was poor, but thought overall play I thought was OK.

Could be good enough backup with a decent /vocal CB next to him. Willing to give him a bit of slack given the wind, lack of game time/defensive teamwork training.

Kabak on the other hand looks like a player with little confidence. Reactive rather than proactive. A poor mans Lovren.

Ditch the high line and Nat will sudden look decent.

Ditch the high line and Kabak will remain shit anyway.

See the difference?

He reminds me of Lovren too but Iā€™d bet Dejan would have went to Richarlison and cleaned him out before the peno situation even develops. He might then miss the header from the free kick he gives away but thatā€™s another story.

Kabak is two/three games in, has had no stable partner, and played well in the Liepzig game. Why so ready to write him off?

Even Rhys Williams played well in CL.

The likes of Leipzig are not used to PL-style pace and intensity.

He did good but if we are honest the bitters sat back and defended mostly after he came on. I would be very worried if he started against city with their pace running at him.

Leipzig are decent. Reached CL semis last year and are pushing Bayern for the league (5 points off but a game in hand to reduce to two points). Leipzig was the only game heā€™s had a consistent CB partner for as well, could be that helped the young, adjusting CB have a sense of stability

Itā€™s weird how opinion forms with almost no basis and then gets perpetuated as fact. He has come in and out in a few decent performances and is hailed as solid. Nothing he has done wrong, or simply just less than well, since then has been noticed by a vast number. Boot it consistently out of play, huh? Get caught for pace, noooo way. Being out of position and ending up gifting a chance, never days man. Rushing out of the line leaving your CB partner exposed also known as ā€˜The Lovrenā€™, impossible to countenance.

Heā€™s a big heart with an honest attitude but we are at risk of starting a myth that heā€™s solid, dependable and wonā€™t let us down. Even today the new guy gets pelters for his part in the pen when Phillips is the one who left him and Trent high and dry. He gets absolute stellar grades for effort but nothing else.

Nat Phillips is not good enough, and on a cosmic level I believe itā€™s only continually saying this which is saving him from a season ending cruciate ligament injury.

We are down to our 7/8/9th and 10th ranked CBs what do you expect. Even so they are not opening the gates and if our midfield (also depleted) and our attack could do the busines we draw or even win matches.

No Nat isnā€™t good enough to be a starter at our club but then nor are Williams and Kabak.

Absolutely agree. What I am not in agreement is the number of posts saying Phillips was solid, dependable, had a good game etc while giving beans to Kabak. Theyā€™re both shit.

Yeah he isnā€™t good enough in the long run but heā€™s the best we have fit at the momentā€¦not that it makes it better.
The balance of the team is way off when you have CMs playing as CBs.

I think heā€™s solid, not good, just solid. Makes him good enough for some championship outfits imo.
I suppose it comes down to your interpretation of the word.
Heā€™s good in the air, can tackle and is strong what more do you want for solid?

Better decision making, better positional play and better ability on the ball.

The manner in which his abilities and contribution are espoused on here while completely ignoring his gaffes is pretty crazy. Not aimed at you, but read up on match reports and in his thread and youā€™d get the idea heā€™s Sami.

But every fit CB at the club doesnt have any of those or thereā€™d be no issue. The people playing are the back ups for the back ups. Thatā€™s how far down the pecking order they are and weā€™re expecting top level performances from Championship players.

No Iā€™m not. His performances are pretty much Championship level. What I am saying is that people are ignoring that and going in about how solid and dependable and what a good game he had. Horseshit. I thought we were over such acceptance.
