Nathaniel PHILLIPS: 2021/22 (on loan at Bournemouth)

I think it’s cos he is the best we currently have…not that that’s saying much.

That’s asking too much to be solid, have you seen any championship football?
Solid is getting the basics right and he does that.

When Phillips started against West Ham I had no issues with it. I knew he’d love the battle with Antonio. He struggles with tricky players.

Positional play is also basic football, not just tackling and heading. 32% of voters thought he was MoM last night despite gross dereliction and getting turned almost halfway in the opposition half leading directly to an immediate 2 on 1 with another defender desperately trying to get back and he has people defending him and attacking Kanak for the way it played out.

Fuck knows what people see when watching the game. Lad is getting a free ride.

Or maybe people are judging him by the standards of a 6th or 7th choice option? Nobody expects him to be Virgil Van Dijk.

You can just look at Nat Phillips in isolation. Or any defender for that matter.

It’s also the effect on the rest of the team.

Correct.

And that is why Klopp should never have dropped Henderson back into defence. The rest of the team loses too much when he isn’t marshalling the midfield.

He should have let Nat play instead and left Jordan to do what he does best.

I’m certainly not. But he’s also being complimented and on the other hand Kanak is getting pelters. That has probably got my back up more than anything when they’re both equally unsuited for us. Phillips shouldn’t be getting plaudits at all for last night’s recklessness and it’s been completely ignored.

Your not looking at the issue in context. I voted Nat MOTM out of desperation. The midfield was horrific, the attack couldn’t score that leaves TAA, Robbo and Nat as Kabak was atrocious.

You say positional play is basic yet half our top players struggle and for defenders it’s the most difficult aspect which requires years of experience, that’s not basic. Look at Stones for example was a wonder boy yet couldn’t get his positioning right, Matip fuck me he played all attackers onside most of the time when he arrived here. Then Matip was from the Bundesliga.

Klopp praised him after the match but he can’t have been too convinced from what he saw. If anything, he probably feels vindicated for not playing Phillips alongside Kabak despite all the clamour from the support to do just that.

I don’t think people realise that that is a Championship level CB pairing.

Kabak isn’t championship level yet!

He’s getting a free ride? He’s played about 5 games. Bar Brighton away has done a decent job considering his standard and that he was probably on his way to a championship club or German 2nd division again.

Phillips and Davies is a Championship level centre half pairing.

Which will make it all the sweeter when they win the Champions League.

He was woeful against Newcastle and pretty poor last night. I’m not jumping into him, I’m questioning how any person on here can look at his performances and say that he played well and at the same time say Kabak was poor. They were both poor and Phillips has been poor and caught out in other games as well. People are being way too selective in what they’re seeing of him while at the same type being hyper critical of others.

This is why I love you so much.

BTW, I think they are good enough for some Premier League teams as well.
