Nathaniel PHILLIPS: 2021/22 (on loan at Bournemouth)

Bizarre. Quite an average player really. Needs to be sold.

Ahahahahahaha.

If the Henderson contract didn’t wind up the Twatterati enough this morning this is going to send them over the edge.

Shame we couldn’t find a deal for him this window. Would have fancied us getting Ā£10m-Ā£15m for him but if all goes well this season he’ll barely play and next summer we’ll probably be happy to take Ā£5m for him. Probably worth it though looking the Twitter fume.

Doesn’t necessarily bode well for the confidence in Gomez’ recovery. As soon as Davies went on loan I felt Phillips would probably stay if there were any doubts about the fitness of the others ahead of him in the pecking order.

Gomez has been on the bench. I’m sure the Phillips situation is down to no decent bids coming in for him

Yes or internal valuations too high.

I thought about this, but considering we might be looking to play twice a week quite often, with 3 senior centre-backs coming back from rather serious injuries and one new to our team, we might have thought that it was worth having Phillips around so we can still ease the rest back in slowly.

Alternatively, with Davies, Phillips and Williams it always felt like one would stay and the decision on whom seemed to be based on which attractive deals we could find for each of them. It seems like Phillips drew the long or short straw, how ever you want to look at it, so now expect news on Williams’ loan to come through shortly.

Think it’s a sensible decision to keep him around for another year to be honest. There is still an element of uncertainty around how both VVD and Gomez will cope after long term injuries, and with both Matip and Konate having dodgy injury records it is better to be safe than sorry.

Williams was always going to go out on loan though.

Situation could still change in January if there is interest.

Again, not sure where that certainty comes from.

I’m pleased for him because he deserves a PL wage after last season but this all seems a bit bizarre. There was plenty of reliable reported interest at the start of the window. He was clearly in line to be sold because he was left out of the friendlies, like Shaqiri. I can only think that whatever valuation we put on him wasn’t met. Anyway at least it makes it less likely that Fabinho will end up playing at CB again this season and if everyone stays fit he can still be either sold or loaned out again next window.

Yeah, I’m a bit surprised too. Barring another massive injury jinx, I can’t see him ever getting as much game time as he got last season. Anyway, pleased for him, and it’s always good to have a reliable cover player in the squad, just in case.

Happy for the lad. I feel he will even score a goal this season. YNWA

He’s got Alisson lined up for that

Solid defender IMO. Not a Rolls Royce but that solid dependable car that starts every morning, never misses a beat and always gets you where you’re going.

A meat a potato’s defender. Good for him.

It’s sensible to keep a fifth choice around for a little bit.

I think that we’ll keep an eye on the centre backs and then look at moving him on in Jan if recovery is going well.

I thought the same as well (as can be seen far above in this thread), but I didn’t think we would be giving him a new long-term contract…

Id quite like a decent run in the FA Cup, he’ll play the early rounds there, and if he comes in for a PL game alongside Virgil I’m happy enough.
