Excerpt from Dan Roanâs article on the BBC:
ââ The conditions that led us here remain.
The billionaire overseas owners that have been welcomed into the English game over the past two decades by football authorities and politicians alike, some of whom backed the plan in the pursuit of greater revenue, and who in some cases have not been seen at the clubs they own for literally years, remain in place.
The American owners of Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal in particular - who unlike those from Russia at Chelsea and Abu Dhabi at Manchester City - are seen to prioritise revenue rather than reputation, may now reconsider their long-term commitment to the clubs they own.ââ
Fuck me.
He seems arrogant, delusional and is misguided.
I understand that UEFA are not perfect, they also need reforming, but he went about creating the ESL in the wrong way.
Found his reasoning astonishing and if he thought that the world would react differently than it did. And in a time when there are still largely no fans anywhere. Perhaps it was their âlast opportunityâ in these years to try and squeeze it through. Also trying to show themselves as not only saviours of football but the well being of kids/young people. Utterly astonishing. What did they expect? They tried to mess with 1 thing that connects maybe the largest number of football fans: basic sporting spirit and the idea of competitiveness.
I agree with you. The things he said that the young teens cannot concentrate for 90 minutes of football and the game time should be reduced, which does not resonate with the youngsters in my family. They are glued to the tv during matches.
UEFA now have the upper hand and are now seen as the saviours of football, but they seriously need to look at their own organisation and the corruption within. This ESL maybe dead in the water now, but I still think they will back with this ESL idea in a few years.
One thing Perez did was convince me he isnât suitable to run a whelk stall let alone European football.
It makes you wonder doesnât it how the fuck these morons have done so well for themselves and climb to positions of influence and power
They speak the language of those in power.
All Dollars and Euros
All owners will have to sign up to the new rule âcommitting them to the core principlesâ of the league with breaches punished by âsignificantâ sanctions.
âThere have been various calls for sanctions against the clubs, including points deductions, relegation and bans from European competitions.â
A retroactive ban that covers the current season would be the best way to punish the clubs involved.
I have thought about this a bit in the last few weeks and I think the better option would be for the clubs involved to lose all voting rights for 3-4 years.
This was about power and money, but I struggle to see how any financial punishment can be issued without hurting the clubs, rather than the owners, so better to cut of their power and influence.
The Football Association said an inquiry into the six clubs has started.
- European Super League: A seismic, pivotal week in football
- There must be consequences for the six ESL clubs - ex-Premier League chief
âThe actions of a few clubs cannot be allowed to create such division and disruption,â the Premier League said.
âWe are determined to establish the truth of what happened and hold those clubs accountable for their decisions and actions.â
Interesting that the FA have already set up an inquiry, and will be interesting to see exactly who where the ones behind it and who were merely going along to not be left behind?
For me, and this is a tough thing to say but I believe the 6 clubs, us included need to be punished.
There is no good fining the clubs because money doesnât mean anything to this lot.
I think the only fair way of doing it is that all 6 start next season with a point deduction.
Maybe like -12 point or something.
Hate it because it affects us but thatâs what I think should happen.
But then the club should buy MâBappe to make up that shortfall? Yeah?
In all seriousness, the sensible way to deal with wouldnât be to punish clubs (ie the fans and players who did so much to stop the ESL). It would be to look at the reasons why an ESL nearly happened and work from there.
I agree that punishments need to be handed out, but a points deduction hursts the fans and players, not the owners who are the ones behand the idea.
I think a lose of voting preveledge is a bigger punishment a it cuts the power and influence that they have tried to steal away from everyone.
I agree with you but I canât see how a losing a vote will hurt the owners.
They donât care about the PL it seems so losing a vote on an issue for a season who 2 doesnât hurt them.
Their club having a mountain to climb to get the riches of European footballl potentially hurts them and still allows the club to compete and qualify.
The reason it needs to be next season and not this is that the difference means so much.
EG - you could deduct the 6 teams 20 points⌠Man City would still be in top 4 but it would push arsenal to 1 point above relegation zone.
It needs to be an equal punishment and therefore if it is points deduction it needs to be next year
