I saw that earlier, and first thought that you had a point. Then I looked at Bournemouth’s recent results againt Arsenal, the typical low-block team this season: three wins from four games, scoring eight goals along the way. Not too shabby, eh?
Also, I found out that a majority of the games they lost this season happened against teams you’d expect to lose against. Here is the full list: us (first game of the season, we were lucky that day), Cheaty, Villa, Sunderland, Everton, Brentford, Arsenal.
Your point still stands of course, but I found these little details interesting nonetheless.
I wouldn’t actually say we were lucky that day, well bar the fact they had rebuilt a back line lucky. They certainly deserved to win the second game by a far bigger margin.
The point being…had we been playing good football, what he was saying and what we were seeing would in fact have lined up, So he would not be contradicting himself in the first place.
Exactly. Was just disagreeing with the point that the press conferences “as much” as the results and the bad football pushed people into a lack of confidence. That was way down the list IMO
As you say, Klopp was different - the match made in heaven for our club. It’s why he was so selective on where he managed too I believe.
There are different personalities that can be successful in finding the right mix to bring it altogether. Rafa was a good example of that. Fair enough, the style of play was a lot more controlled at times (not heavy metal), but he got the bigger picture, and went in to bat for us/the club as necessary (facts). He understood the history of the club, and engrained himself in the club.
Gerard Houllier (RIP) got it too - who lets the reds out…we all know.
I’ve not seen too much of Iraola in the media, but he seems a calm and measured guy. I’ve seen much more of Bournemouth, and what’s not to like - Wirtz will hopefully be given the chance to show what he’s all about under him. Here’s hoping he is able to come in and find his own way to weave himself into the fabric of the club. I think he’ll need to be afforded some time and there will need to be a tempering of expectations. We will need to have a better season than last - 20 losses, unacceptable.
Good to get some quality opposition, even if I wanted even better (or simply some of the best teams currently) quality than that, after friendlies against Sunderland, Wrexham and Leeds in the US.
If you are not getting the results the fans want a manager who can communicate in a way that comes across as credible and clear visioned about what it takes to improve will retain the faith and patience for longer than if they cannot do that. And if they cannot, fans, the media, and even those inside the club, will start viewing him more skeptically and being less forgiving of a bad results.
You can make the margin for error you have and the room you are given to fix something far smaller by not doing well in your public appearances. That was one of Slot’s downfalls.
I think we should hire some of our ex-players for coaching team, and not take the lot from Bournemouth, it needs something fresh, but crucially, we need an element of continuity. Milner is a dream hire if we can do it. Not sure about Thiago.
I think fans go with what they see with their own eyes on the pitch. There’s nothing that Slot could have said that would have made it any better.
As an example, I remember a United fan texting me stats to show that Klopp’s record in the first 6 months or so was worse than Brendan’s. I wasn’t the slightest bit concerned because we could see the direction it was going in the football played and attitude of players.
