Players Who Shook the Kop (2026 edition)

Get your votes in for Liverpool’s greatest players.

I imagine a lot of Klopps players will enter; hopefully enough older heads voting to keep the old guard remembered too

That’s tough. I think I end up with a bias towards the 1970s, 1980s and the Klopp years. There are some names that I only know about from the history books that you have to pick (e.g. Gordon Hodgson) but I can’t help but think that it would be better if they had sub-divided the poll by decade and position.

I suspect that the results will suffer from recency bias. I tried to do this on a basis of achievement and longevity, which meant un-selecting some notable names.

Biggest issue is they force a recency bias. They only list 250 names and you have players like Jarell Quansah listed. However I dont think anyone would argue that say Neil Mellor had a much bigger impact on this club (key contribution to Rafas CL run)

Yes, some tough decisions to make and my choices ended up weighted towards those I grew up with, so mostly 70s and 80s, with some from the 60s and others from 2000s…

I expected that recency bias - that said, not only there are players now who each won a CL and two PL titles after one of the leanest periods in our history, there are also players who can be rightly considered the best ever at Liverpool in their respective positions. Frankly, even though their overall form this season hasn’t been on the level of their previous ones, I’m dreading the day when we have to say goodbye to Alisson, Van Dijk and Salah. Mane, Robbo and Trent also have to considered among the best ever in their roles, too.

Yes. I think I managed to include 5 of those 6.

Calvin Ramsay anyone?

Not yet.
Give him another 5 or 6 years and ask again.

I remember as a nipper, watching a guy called Jack Whitham scoring a hat-trick against Derby County at Anfield - thought he was great seeing him do that…Alas, Toshack arrived not long after, and poor old Jack was forever hindered with injury, otherwise he might have made the top-ten best…
Can still remember the ‘sound’ it made of him smacking the ball before it travelled some distance and hit the back of the net…

Jack Whitham, there’s a blast from the past

I don’t know if you can access Facebook, but here’s the highlights:

How are you supposed to pick only 25 players? First selection had over 40 and I’ve just realised that I left Keegan out.

Yeah, I could’ve picked 50 easily.
Just shows how blessed we’ve been over the years

That hat trick was in 1972. Toshack was injured for the match. He signed in 1970.

Yeah but compared to when it was made the first time (just on the back of Istanbul, but not sure before or after Cardiff?), there’s more players who deserve to be there after years of more success, so it would mean less space for such shouts.

It’s alright. I mean, it’s impossible to get to a general consensus anyway, but we can accept in the start that it’s not possible and then we can still try and make a good list. Whatever the list is, we’ll discuss it as always and that can also be interesting.

I found it very hard, counted through the first time I’d voted thinking I’d been harsh and would have to vote for more only to realise I’d voted for ≈50 and I’d have to get even harsher

Tried to find an appropriate balance between pre 90s, the team teams I grew up watching, and Brenda onwards but felt I was being harsh to all. Some of the names I had to take votes away from was shocking to me, but with a limited amount of votes comes a stricter selection process.

Do think they could have benefitted from providing a little biography for players that newer/younger fans wouldn’t necessarily be aware of.

Also think a minimum appearance count would have been useful as there are players on the list/omitted from the list that baffle me tbh.

I’m going to preemptively guess that Mo will join Gerrard and Dalgliesh in the top three - it’ll be interesting to see if the voting Egyptian contingent is big enough for him to displace one of them.

Just popped to my mind that this could be “convenient” if Salah is set to move on this summer.
