I wonder if that is something that Slot has been working on with him? Maybe he spotted something in his game that would mark him out as a utility player.

Think the idea was fresh legs vs fresh Doku but also Slot not wanting to remove Gomez from CB where he did a fantastic job.

Meant to add, for all the stick Dom gets, he was brilliant today. Seemed to be everywhere. Good in the air, tough tackling and elegant when on the ball

I thought Szoboslai was brilliant today and should have been in with a shout for man of the match.

When we look back on his time here I think one of his greatest achievements will be considered the squad that he bequeathed his successor.

We must be flying, as the post-match would light up like a Christmas tree if we lost.

I said I was wrong.

Iā€™m not apologising until we win the league.

Absolutely brilliant. We were better than them in all departments. On the balance of chances we were well worth at least two more goals.

We are juggling injuries too, but somehow only Arsenal and now Man City benefit from that narrative. Key players have been, and are missing, but we get on with it. Exhibit A today was Joe Gomez. He came in and did a great job. No ring rust whatsoever. I speculated before kick off that Haaland might try to isolate him, as there is a slight drop off in size and strength from Konate to Gomez, but credit to Gomez, he was imperious and Haaland didnā€™t get a sniff.

Slotā€™s innovative use of Diaz though the middle has been a lovely tactical thing to see, as he is lively and moves so well, and it enables Gakpo to start on the left and rotate Nunez with Jota being out injured.

So many good things about that performance today. The one bah humbug comment I will make, since Christmas is coming into view and I want to channel my inner Ebenezer Scrooge, is that we were too wasteful in front of goal.

The game should have been over at half time, but with only one goal in it, they always had a puncherā€™s chance. Man City were building up a head of steam for the first 20 mins of the second half, but then we went again, made a couple of subs and ran out worthy winners in the end.

Final comment is on Salahā€™s contract. I donā€™t like the way he has talked about it the past couple of weeks. Thereā€™s nothing wrong with saying, ā€œI wonā€™t talk publicly about that, and if and when thereā€™s something to announce, you will hear.ā€ Or an even more generous, ā€œI love it here and hope we can sort something out.ā€ But the public comment comes across as a little bit wounded, which isnā€™t hitting the right note for me.

Maybe that is in fact the way he is feeling? I donā€™t think we can ask for much more than professionalism and effort on the pitch.

Iā€™ve got no issue at all with Mo. Heā€™s been an undeniable all-time great for Liverpool and deserves a new contract, so if he wants to try to force the hand of the brass by speaking out before and after every match, then let him. Heā€™s been the consummate professional on the pitch and has been immense for us this season.
