Post match: Liverpool v Man City (EPL 10/3/24 3.45pm)

As soon as Rodri got yellow carded - it took him out of the game which demonstrates how much his play relies on shit-housery.
Pity he isn’t deservedly yellow carded a lot more in other games

‘I can see why it’s not been given’

Jamie Carragher

Former Liverpool defender on Sky Sports

Jeremy Doku is almost trying to pull his foot away, he doesn’t go right through with it.

Anywhere else on the pitch and it’s a foul, I almost think there is an unwritten rule in football that it has to be a bit more [physical] for a penalty - it’s lucky, but I can see why they have not given it.

Pains him to say it, but stonewall he reckons.

Well then he is subjectively as crap as the others.

Thats his job and he is promoted to these games to make the big calls.

Time and time again he doesn’t.

I’ll go back and see what everyone else thought, but my reaction having just finished watching is that we were the better side and deserved to win.

Diaz had a great game, kept going, great dribbling, good speed too… but alas, some dodgy finishing from 2-3 big chances meant we failed to grab all three points.

Oliver at the death chickened out from giving a penalty. Doku, studs up into the chest on Mac Allister - how is that not a penalty? A very clear foul if ever I saw one.

Michael Oliver does like his little refereeing jaunts to Abu Dhabi. Bought and paid for, it would seem.

Full credit to the mighty reds. We were brilliant, and right into them. VVD deserved MOTM. So many other players were great too, including Endo and Mac Allister.

Disappointed with the result, but we are still right in this, and there’s a fair chance we will leapfrog back to the summit after the next round of matches.

It was not given because its one of those that in people’s gut doesnt feel like a penalty because MacAlister was going no where and so people are kind of principled against that being a penalty so late in such a key game. You know, it’s the old “the players should determine the outcome not the refs.”

So people had that gut reaction and then when rationality quickly start rasing its head, it is being shut out with people reaching for post hoc justifications that have no basis in the rules for their decision. Because they dont want to admit that 1) they were talking shite initially, and 2) they dont really know the rules or care about them.

EDIT: I know the sentiment in the quoted post is not that of Sands, but of Carra being quoted

How in the fuck is that not a penalty at the end? You have to be shitting me??

I mean it shouldn’t have come down to that as we had plenty of opportunities to put that match away. But that was a fucking shocking decision.

I dont understand why people are conceding the title after playing City off the park for 70 minutes. Only sad part is we didn’t win the game, still level on points with Arsenal, who have to go to the Etihad.

Its a close race but we are still positioned very nicely.

I have never seen him so happy about his team’s performance it will be the saddest day when he finally goes

Totally agree. We are in a great position with players coming back and arguably the easiest schedule the rest of the way. We weathered the worst of the storm already. We just can’t take the foot off the gas.

Possibly they put too much cream in it in the UK i am in à curry club and any of the members ordering a Korma is excommunicated

SMS Message: Carragher’s comments around the unwritten rule are why fans get frustrated. The game is built on laws and referees have been sticklers for them this season around time wasting, dissent and cards so they should accept no unwritten rules. A foul is a foul is a foul. from Mekaeal

In my opinion that is a good point for us. We are still ahead of $ity, only 10 matches left. They were much better for the first 45 minutes, we improved during the 2nd half. Don’t forget that our goal was an absolute gift from Ake and Ederson. Then we had several very good chances, but missed them. Still Al Citihad hit the bar and the woodwork and Foden also missed a huge chance 1 vs.1 with Kelleher.

Diaz missed our best chances, but I said it many times that he is nowhere near Mane’s quality. Still Lucho left his heart on the pitch, he is a real fighter, but not a typical goalscorer. Jota’s injury is really hurting us.

Kelleher was very solid today, can’t balme him for Stones’ goal, his distribution was fantastic, one mistake led to &ity hitting the bar, but otherwise calm and solid. Quansah also looked solid, VvD was our best defender today, a true red captain.

Bradley with good 60 minutes, while Gomez did not play his best game, still looked a little bit better when Robbo’s introduction let him play as a right full back.

MacAllister - best midfielder on the pitch by a mile, glad to see him rattle that prick Bernardo Silva. Endo and Szoboszlai did their job. Nunez with fine 60 minutes, winning the penalty.

Elliott was a fuckin collosus, only Alexis looked a little bit better than him. Salah played it safe, it is obvious that he does not want to make too many sprints.Gakpo was disappointing.

I need to remind you that we were without 10 injured players - Alisson, TAA, Matip, Konate, Bajcetic, Thiago, Gravenberch, Jones, Doak, Jota. The away team missed only 1 player.

And at the same time Salah is not 100% ready, Nunez and Szoboszlai are not ready to play more than 60 minutes at the highest level. We played with our 5th choice central defender and we are still 1 point ahead of Shity and level on points with Arsenal.

The referees are also doing their best to stop us. Last week the biggest problem was a free kick in front of our goal in the 98th minute. Now Micheal Fuckin Oliver and Stewart Fuckin Atwell missed a 100% penalty in the 98th minute…

I am waiting for the international break and hoping for the end of our injury nigtmare. Hopefully we will have TAA, Gravenberch, Jones, Alisson, Konate back by the end of the month. They will give us extra quality and fresh legs. The most important thing for us was not losing today.

‘What a game, what an atmosphere’

FT: Liverpool 1-1 Man City

Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was really good football game. The best performance in the second half we ever played against Man City. We never dominated that much, never were so brave. It was absolutely exceptional.

“What a game, what an atmosphere, what an afternoon.”

On whether Liverpool should have had a penalty: "I think it’s worth talking about. Would you have given a penalty in the situation? Isn’t it [VAR] there for making the right decision? This situation in all positions of the pitch is 100% a foul. And it is a yellow card. He hit the ball but, but if the ball is not there he kills him.

“He [Mike Dean] will find something and all the others as well. It’s a penalty for all people on the planet.”

On if he thought City’s goal should have been ruled out: "I didn’t see that. I don’t know. I saw yesterday Arsenal, if all these blocks are allowed then it’s fine, block! That’s our fault and not other people’s fault, It was a good routine, didn’t expect it. If it was a routine then it was good. Forget the refs, I am here to talk about football.

"So many things we overcame but today we showed we are ready to fight and that’s what I love the most.

“After this game nobody should open the champagne bottles because there’s still a long way to go but if you can play football like this against Manchester City it’s a statement and I love that.”

The official Limiedictor (a predictor by…you get it)

City with the marginally easiest run in, but still enough banana skins for us to scrape by.

One thing to take from this is that Utd, Spurs, Villa, West Ham and Wolves can collectively have a big say in where the title goes
