This is my main issue rather than picking on individual players. Tactically we were off. Our movement up front in these scenarios doesn’t work at times. We need to look at attacking different spaces.
Can anyone enlighten me why we seem to like crossing the ball so much? It’s not as if we have a target in there. It works from time to time but mostly it’s easy to clear but it’s clearly something Klopp wants us to do.
It was disappointing, but definitely not end of the world. Relegation candidate, game in front of the Kop, dropped points; big woof, let’s move on.
Two things did surprise/disappoint me. It didn’t look like we have had eight days break and we became strangely and abruptly flat after HT.
We are still top of the table. This says a lot about ourselves and the season. It’s going to be a war of attrition; the one with nerve and stamina will finish first. We maybe only trudging along, but none is, or ever going to be, doing any better.
Remain a believer. This is the season for Mentality Monsters.
I’ve only watched their goal once, as it happened, so may be wrong but my recollection was Jones gave the ball away in a dangerous area and Williams headed it out for a corner. I don’t remember Robbo being involved but like I said I may be wrong.
The thing with Jones is people will say you have to let young players make mistakes to learn from them but from what I’m seeing he isn’t learning from them. I know he’s a great talent and all that but his 2 biggest deficiencies in my opinion are he dwells on the ball and gives up possession in bad areas of the pitch. That’s been the case since I first saw him play and nothing has changed.
I think he should sit Newcastle out. I’d play Shaqiri for a bit of extra craft against a side that will set up similar to how WBA did. We’ll need more creativity than we had yesterday otherwise it will be the same old same old against a parked bus.
Robbo sliced an attempted clearance for the first corner which started the problem. Not knocking Robbo, just pointing out that some players make mistakes that are ignored whereas others get crucified on here for their mistakes. Having said that we were cheated by VAR again ( not by VAR but by the cheat in control of it ) The Albion player used Fabinho as a step ladder to win his header, a clear foul, and also Sadio was surely held by an Albion defender late on and that was one of the main problems VAR was supposed to eliminate .Even more proof that VAR officials should be neutrals and not Mancs.
We never seem to play well after a longer break. Consequently we were the architects of our own downfall, in that we failed to take advantage of our domination in the first half. We failed to take our chances when they presented themselves.
We were far to slow in transition from defence into attack, on the few occasions wba mounted an attack.
Our midfield was particularly culpable for hanging onto the ball, passing it sideways and backwards for far too long, allowing wba to recover their defensive shape. By the time the ball did get through to the attackers there were two banks of 5 to penetrate with defenders doubling up on each attacker.
As our frustration grew Henderson started lumping the ball into the penalty area, which was futile given wba’s height advantage. All wba had to do was to hang on until a dead ball situation presented itself.
It would appear that Jones is a victim of believing the hype surrounding him - he dithered on the ball too frequently and was robbed on at least three occasions. A spell in the U23s might help him recover a sense of humility.
And unfortunately it would appear that Rhys Williams is far too slow to play our high defensive line. He will always be vulnerable to the ball into the space behind our defenders and a fast attacker. The question is, are the other young centre backs any better?
Matip’s injury showed why it was foolhardy not to buy another centre back in the summer.
Please Santa, can we have Koulibaly as a late Chrisie pressie?
I’m only a settee viewing fan, and have watched their goal, there is clearly a foul on Fab hands on his shoulders, over his face clearly impeding. Why did our friend VAR not intervene.( sorry if this has been discussed)
It’s only fair that criticism can be offered from fans. We all know he’s a talent and has done excellently. We all want him to become fully established. We all know they’ll be ups and downs (see the comments on TAA lately - an outsider would be flabbergasted).
In this match, Curtis was caught out twice in the first half dawdling, and one of those situations led to a run on goal.
And then he did something similar leading up to the goal with only a few minutes to play. A bit of nous shown there, and we would’ve seen out this game 1-0. But I’m sure he’ll learn from this (no player can play like robots and cut out all slack play, but players as they mature can reduce the frequency of this).
Personally I was crying out for Klopp to replace him at the 60 to 80 min mark, and to avoid hindsight bias accusations, in the forum thread at half time I wrote that Curtis needs to stop dawdling as the next time would cost us - and it did.
The issue with Jones holding onto the ball for too long is a double edged sword. He either gets caught in possession or he slows an attacking move down.
I’m sure he’ll learn. A certain Ronaldo had a similar issue a long time ago.
Given that during the last 2-3 seasons the club have tightened up on giving info to journos, I wouldn’t worry too much. These days edwards gets shit done. I have faith in there being a plan.
If Matip’s injury is a bad one, it might reluctantly force their hand. Edwards and Klopp are very reluctant to be reactive in the market, but there are surely limits.
Thiago isn’t the same kind of player as Fab. It’s like Masch and Alonso both used to play deep but are very different players. Would have loved to see Thiago out there against them though, exactly the kind of game we brought him in to help win.
You’re right, we couldn’t envisage what has happened completely but we all expect Matip to frequently miss games. He has done his whole time here. So we were always in a risky position should we lose one of Joe or Virgil. To lose both is incredibly unlucky but relying on Matip being available was shortsighted as many of us pointed out at the time.
