Looking at these stats, you’d think that we dominated that game, but apparently, that wasn’t the case?
We simply didn’t do enough to trouble their keeper thus didn’t do enough to win the game, besides the effort from Wirtz in the first half…I’m struggling to recall much. The penalty takes the xG over 2 and 16 of those 27 shots were blocked.

If all of the midfielders want to do the same things, and your fullbacks are darting forward as well, you don’t have anyone shielding the centerbacks.
Unless Szobo or Grav change their approaches, I don’t think a Szobo/Grav/Wirtz midfield works.

… but we have to adapt as a team to these situations, and we have know that these situations can happen.
The situations is not just because one person is playing there, it’s something that we have to correct between a lot of players.

I’ve seen the match now.
For me Isak, Szoboszlai and Gravenberch were relatively poor.
Kerkez, Wirtz and Gakpo relatively good.
We’re definitely a very different team than last season. The effort was good and I’m interested to see how this might develop.
I like Jaquet a lot. Passes well which adds a new dimension.
Isak too little presence.
Both Szoboszlai and Gravenberch too easily beaten. Why do they commit only to jump out the way behind the opposition player?
Either get the shoulder in or get Infront.

We certainly weren’t dominant but we played well for the most part with a couple of very poor defensive phases thrown in that Newcastle took advantage of.

Not dominant in the context of forcing loads of saves and defensive blocks, but possession wise well on top.
Combination of poor touches in the final 3rd, and general lack of attacking quality meant clear cut chances were rare.
Awful/lazy midfield tracking, and Sunday league defending didn’t help.

Yeah I agree and I said elsewhere that he was our best attacker in the 2nd half of last season - not even close for me.
I think it’s good for him at a young age to play on both flanks. It requires a different skillset and it was obviously uncomfortable for him. He kept having a go though, even when he couldn’t get any change out of Hall he kept attempting to run at him and go on the outside. Nothing wrong with a young player having a different look.
Clearly we are targetting some wide players to jump him and Gakpo in the pecking order. If we end up with something like Barcola, Minteh, Munoz and Ngumoha as our primary wide options I think we’d assume Ngumoha is 4th choice there and that probably suits him well for where he is in his development. Close enough to get a lot of minutes, far away enough to not have all the pressure on him to win games for us.

Yeah we definitely werent undeserving of a point, but I think Newcastle were more threatening as well than is made out in those stats. A few of us called out the threat they posed on the break even before their second goal so it was clear they had it in them to hurt us even with little possession. And there were probably 2 or 3 heart in mouth moments that likely didnt register on those stats, like crosses whipped in behind the defense that we got away with more from luck than judgement.
All in all a point was a fair result, but a big part of that factors in we gave away 2 really bad goals.

I’m 60 and still play and still learning, especially the tactical sidem so saying they can’t be coached or learn is wrong.

Biggest difference in our press from the front players is that you can actually see them trying to cut down passing angles and forcing play to one side and then trying to trap them near the touchline.
For me it will only improve with time and willingness.
I also think this is why Minteh is attractive as a player to us, not only does he have pace, he also works hard defensively.

Just saying… but if there was another 5mins on the clock after we scored the penalty, I think we would have scored again.
We were playing against a hostile crowd and a pumped up first team… all in all, I think we did reasonably well in a first PL game under a new manager and backroom staff…
Liked the fact AI had no problem taking Wirtz off when he did.
One by one, I think the players will improve as the season goes on

We had another attack just after Gakpo’s goal and I do think if we hadn’t conceded that I think we would have probably got 1-2 more but it was a sucker punch that took the wind out of us.

Maybe you’re right. And I’m getting impatient and frustrated.
I SO want Wirtz and Isak to succeed. And maybe their price tags have warped my expectations.
They’re not coming into a settled squad. We are in transition.
I suppose I was just venting.

Thanks for that photo, first time I have seen that view and was wondering who should have been picking up or following Osula their CF and as you said Virg is way too deep.
Also on both goals, Virg is the experienced CB, why isn’t he taken charge and talking to Jaquet and making a decision of who challenges the ball carrier.
