Post Match Thread - Liverpool 0 - 1 Arsenal - 1st November 2026

I remember @Mascot mentioning this years ago.

When the opposition are allowed to foul and questionably tackle you and yet when you try to reciprocate your whistled every time and possibly even yellow carded what happens? You start backing off. And at the highest levels of football that little gap in each confrontation leads to goals for the opposition. Inevitably.
Seen this repeatedly over Klopp’s tenure. Remember seeing this under Rafa as well. And seeing it again now.

I understand what you are saying. It affects the intensity. We have been pretty low down the disciplinary table in the last decade season on season more or less. That doesn’t tell the story of an individual match, I know.

I don’t have the desire to go check each season to see which games contained the most cards and how many fouls for and against. I was interested to see what the card table looked like tho.

Tompkins’ has really bad credibility issues. Whatever argument he may have is undercut by mistaking the volume of stats for quality and meaningfulness of analysis. Almost all of what he presents is merely descriptive not comparative, and almost of all this relates to statistics we have no normative sense for…How many VAR overturn penalties should a team have had in the first 23 minutes of a game? Seriously, WTF sort of statistic is that?

However, the basic foul data speaks for itself. No team in the league is penalized at the rate we are (fouls per challenge). And no team in the league has as low a rate of fouls given for challenges on us. Statistically this being legit is in the realms of “if we turn on the large hadron colider we cannot completely rule out that it opens a black hole and summons a world eating demon” sort of possibility.

Exactly we had plenty of shots on target but if they get deflected by the opposition defenders it is then classed as not on target, total nonsense stat.
They should do like in cricket ie the trajectory of the ball without the deflection then it would be a valid stat.

As in a shot cleared a couple of yards of the goal line?

It is not an analysis of just this season.

That is what i just posted, for this season, according to google Ai

How can they have a total nonsensical stat where you can get more than one foul given per tackle?

I am at a total loss mate. The AI believes its own lies too! :joy:

Have they played Arsenal yet, as they seem to have lots of free kicks for fouls where there is no tackle.

August 21st apparently. It is from google AI so september 32nd is probably more accurate.

That’s only true when Wolves aren’t in the EPL however it’s clear.

How can you say that what he presents is merely descriptive when you admit that the basic foul count supports his primary points?

@RedWhippet you are onto something

During the match at the Emirates Stadium, Coventry’s defensive efforts yielded the following tracking metrics:

  • Total Fouls Committed: 13 [1.41]
  • Total Tackles Attempted: 6 [1.41]
  • Successful Tackles (Tackles Won): 5 [1.41]

This resulted in a ratio of 2.17 fouls per total tackle (or 2.6 fouls per completed tackle) [1.41]. This high foul-per-challenge rate reflected Coventry’s struggle to contain Arsenal’s transitions cleanly, as the home side ran out 3–0 winners behind goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Ødegaard [1.41, 1.51].

This is awful. This isnt just an incredibly difficult pass, but even if he hits it Cody will still have more to do than Barcola would have had if Wirtz had just played the simple ball on the floor down the line for Barcola to run onto.

Yeah I noticed that moment during the match, asking myself why he was going for the difficult crossfield ball, instead of just passing it forward to the player who had made the run. It’s all the more frustrating that the way he interchanges the ball with a team-mate before that is absolute class. All he needs to do then is to release that simple forward pass towards Barcola.

There is arguably an even worse one a few minutes later with Mac Allister taking a low percentage shot from the right of the edge of the box with Wirtz in acres of space to his left. Predictably, it got blocked.

Our tendency to destroy promising openings by making the wrong decision or failing to execute simple passes or crosses must be close to an all-time high.
