Post Match v Newcastle (A) - 25/08/25

Not in picture is Rio’s responsible adult who is required to be present at all times so a child is not left around adults unsupervised

Apologies to Szobo having decided to rewatch the match my annoyance about a couple of times he was taken out of position was heightened by the tension of the match.

He generally did play well, also VVD was even better on rewatch. I actually thought Jones played ok but apparently someone said he was shit.

I think my fantasy team resembles my predictions this week ah well 3 points I don’t care, plus Rio has delivered as I said he could.

The thing with the Gordon incident is that once again the Geordies anger is being directed at the wrong people.

They seem pissed off at the ref and VAR for sending him off whilst lauding Gordon for showing the fight and aggression that has ultimately cost them one of their better players for half the game.

If that was the other way round I’d be seriously pissed at our striker for losing his head, letting the occasion get to him and probably costing us some points.

But much like this whole Isak scenario, where they seem more pissed at us for pursuing him than their own club for not having a scooby and getting turned down by player after player all summer, they’re somehow entirely comfortable with the actions of their people involved. Imagine Darwin doing that for us. He’d be called brain dead and mentally weak for not being able to control his emotions.

They truly have drunk the Saudi cool-aid and think everyone is out to get them. Even the Newcastle journos at The Athletic are peddling a story today about things going against them but they’re ultimately winners. It’s like a piece you’d expect to see on a fan website just with some fancier words.

Problem is he was stoking it pre match…. And then he does that. It’s a red card but at least be subtle about it.

I have been surprised by how close to unanimous agreement there is that he deserved red. It’s rare you get that, especially where we are involved. It makes the outrage all the most pathetic

People get on Jones back, but ffs. He is maybe fifth choice in a midfield three. Mac Allister wasn’t available and Szoboszlsk was having to cover at full back, so what do you want slot to do? Pick Endo? Strap up Bajcetic?

Jones is never going to be the main, but if he is your fifth midfielder you are doing very, very well.

But what about the narrative?

Yeah I think the bigger problem yesterday was our forwards werent great outlets and lost it too easily too often. Even Hugo, who has been exceptional at that so far. Part of that was surely the lack of protection they got from a ref, but ultimately it’s nigh on impossible for a midfield to retain possession when the ball goes missing every time you pass it forward.

I have been a fan of Cody since he first arrived but the ball does not stick to him anywhere near as well as it did to Diaz and with Mo invisible for large segments of games that kicked us in the tits yesterday

I thought Virgil was very sporting, after Gordon assaulted him. He stayed very calm and didn’t react, probably relieved that his leg wasn’t broken. Gordon was playing up to the Newcastle fans, knowing he would be a hero if he injured Virgil. I know I would have reacted in a different way and received a red card myself.

If you look at the neck/collar line of Rio, it is actually very obvious that it’s fake. I couldn’t see the details on my PC, but on the phone, I could enlarge the photo and see the details.

Polarising debate like nobody else since Lucas. It would actually be better if there wasn’t such rabid defence of the guy as soon as there is some critique of him. It’s okay to say someone had a bad game. Instead we have palpably bad performance against 10 men and people tying themselves in knots to justify it and just like last week with my critique of Konate, it’s always the fault of someone else further forward. Accountability doesn’t happen that way.

Thing is that you are in the minority about Jones. The stats suggest that he did fine and from the absence of comments so do most of the posters here.

I thought that was late releasing the ball on a couple of occasions, but otherwise he was fine.

Konate on the other hand is indefensible.

Possibly so and I think that will remain so until someone better comes in and the difference becomes clear.
