Post Match v Newcastle (A) - 25/08/25

I was watching him on the rewatch and he impressed me as much as he did in the game. I think he was very solid.

There was that sequence around Tonali’s injury where he did an outragous dive, leaping into the air like he’d been shot out of a cannon, and then Hugo was subject to 3 separate 2 handed shoves in retribution for Tonali’s acrobatics . All right under the nose of the ref.

By far the best football played by either side, coming in the final minute. What a team move, what a game. Hope we continue to see more of Chinese and Rio. Really like Gakpo, but seems like Rio already has more in his locker, just needs time and experience.

Horrendous wasn’t it. Like somehow this CL team who have spent a fortune in the past couple years are this hard done by underdog battling against a corrupt system designed just to keep them down.

If I paid for it instead of just stealing the articles I wanted to read I’d be cancelling my subscription.

Whoa, slow down there. Gakpo has been a top performer for us and his national side for a few years now, he’s played 90+ games for us and scored 26 goals. Rio’s played a handful of minutes and scored one. There’s no doubt that he’s an exciting talent with a bright future, but comparing him to Gakpo at this stage is unhelpful.

They’re both wide players that possess very contrasting styles of play and I find opinions such as these (not saying I agree or disagree here btw) are usually out of one’s preference and subjectivity over what they like a winger to bring or showcase.

The whole game was like one big, beautiful example of karma.

Gordon goes around throwing himself to the ground a few times, misses a couple of quite good scoring opportunities, then loses his head and gets himself a deserved red card.

Toon now without their current 1st choice striker for the next 3 games.

Before the game my greatest worry was Liverpool players getting injured. ā€œGet Into Themā€ etc. Then Tonali goes comically throwing himself over after minimal contact, and does his shoulder (suspect an AC joint strain) followed by Joelington tweaking his groin.

Striker that Newcastle wanted to ā€œpair with Isakā€ (yeah, right) promptly scores against them.

Honestly don’t care if we sigh Isak at this point; certainly don’t want him if the price is anywhere above 120m. Even if he ā€œreintegratesā€ it’ll take him at least a month to get up to fitness and form, and by that time the Toon may be well in arrears of any hope for another top 4-5 finish this season.

The thing is they will both be effective as part of our forward line. I find this a bit tiresome no offense.

Like I said, I really like Gakpo, he’s been a great player for us. Rio’s going to (probably) take another couple of years to develop for us, and I trust Slot to handle him well. Just saying that I think Rio’s ceiling is higher than Cody’s (don’t really expect Cody to have further development, he’s already mature as a player).

I’ve just been reading a lot of reports from last night about how great Newcastle were and how disorganised and clueless we were.

We did win, didn’t we? Am I off on some Guinness fuelled delusion?

The way Sandcastle threw everything at us last night in a shit or bust style, not only cost them 3 points… it may well transpire, that it will cost them 6 points in total, due to Leeds taking the points off a depleted side at the weekend.
Fuck you Howe… A poundland version of a Bobby Robson

Playing badly but still winning is what makes champions. I don’t even want to know what would have happened here if we lost.

What I personally don’t like are the constant derogatory comments towards some of our players. They immediately target one person or another, and I find it hard to bear.

After everything our summer went and so many new integrations, it can’t be perfect. These people were definitely missed when God was handing out patience.

Someone like Wirtz, for example, has certainly never played against such a physical, anti-football team before, but he is constantly being abused. Probably by people who have never seen him play before and somehow expect him to immediately perform the way they imagine he should. I will definitely withdraw from the match threads if the tone here remains this bad. I can’t put up with this in the long run.

What’s polarising here? He is the fifth choice midfielder in a game two other midfielders were unavailable to play in midfield. And he did OK.

I challenge you to name me a better fifth choice at any other club.

Not sure if he’s actually viewed as 5th choice, or whether that is even a thing with the number of games that he will be expected to play over the course of a 50 game plus season. There is too big a drop off in what he brings and what MacAllister, Gravenberch and Dominic have on the field. I’m not really interested in getting involved in a back and forth about which team might have a better ā€˜5th choice’ to be honest.

I find it hard to accept he did ā€˜ok’ in game where we were overrun by 10 men. It’s just making excuses for the lad.
