Post Match v Newcastle (A) - 25/08/25

Since there’s no player profile that I can see in Kirby, here’s a profile on Rio for those interested Rio Ngumoha: How Liverpool poached wonderkid from Chelsea - BBC Sport

Probably worth rectifying that as he’s going play a fair bit I feel.

I would not worry about Wirtz he will toughen up in time and then watch out. All the new recruits are finding their feet but that hostile atmosphere is tough to get used to by anybody but VVD let it all wash over him and will help them all cope with that kind of anti football .
Sorry to say this is just the first sample in the premier league next Arse then Everton .
I was dead proud of all our players yesterday and it was a minor miracle they mostly came out unscathed. I was so stressed the first half and even though we went 2:0 up in the second half I was really very tense and my fears were realised when they equalised but when Rio scored I scared the hell out of my wife with a big roar arms aloft haha.

I’ve noticed some young players come over and play better in Europe until they get the hang of it. I do expect his best stuff to be there until he gets used to it.

The commentator said that in first look it looks the tackle landed on the ankle which is deemed less serious than further up the leg but once VAR showed that the first contact was on the calf, then there is no doubt that it would be considered reckless and dangerous.

Precisely. Just like how the likes of much maligned midfielders including Gini, Hendo and now Curtis, if they are so bad, the managers who keep playing them must be idiots then.

These 3 are no geniuses when it comes to skills but their mentality keep playing themselves into the team. They deserve alot more respect.

Yes we actually lost the match despite what the stats may tell you

How ludicrous is that so if he snaps his Achilles or damages ligaments in his ankle it’s ok?

It’s just what the rules generally advise. Of course the referee and VAR looks at each tackle in context and decided. This time round we are fortunate the VAR took interest and asked the referee to look again

Then the rules need to be more specific instead of generalised because it would cost a players career.

He got sent off though. The rule and the ref’s understanding of it was sufficient to dole out the right punishment.

I think the point is, if he’d only caught Virgil on the ankle he’d probably have got away with it, despite the fact that an attack of that type could also cause serious injury.

There is no reason to think that. A significant part of the decision making was over the force of the challenge related to how far he sprinted to lunge into the tackle.

I’m just paraphrasing the arguments above.

What I like about this is how Curtis protects the ball while eliminating two opponents, and drives forward with it until the edge of the box. The last ball is disappointing indeed, but as you stated, it’s normal with new team-mates around him. This will only get better with time on the training pitch.

Probably the least press resistant player in the squad due to his two glaring weaknesses, holding onto the ball for too long and not using the simple/obvious pass. He has an outstanding first touch, unbelievable close control (which I suspect fuels his weaknesses), good engine. He is at long last starting to gradually cutting down on his weaknesses, and is a perfect squad player that is no 1 on the list when a starter is off form or injured. He is certainly doing a job, and more effectively under Slot.

Sure, but the arguments above are:

  • A commentator seeing the incident incorrectly before correcting himself
  • the commentator imaging what the ref would have done had the incident been different and instead been consistent with what he initially thought he saw
  • The above is done while refusing to consider other factors the ref would have been addressing in deciding the level of punishment (the strength of challenge and lack of control)
  • people deciding the rules need to changed to correct an issue of a hypothetical ref making a bad hypothetical decision over a hypothetical incident.
