Overall great three points’published at 22:28 British Summer Time

22:28 BST

FT: Newcastle 2-3 Liverpool

Liverpool

Liverpool captain Virgin van Dijk, speaking to Sky Sports:

"We all know it’s a difficult place to come. We know there was a lot of oil on the fire this week to get Newcastle fired up. What happened tonight was expected and, for us, the disappointing part was that we conceded two set pieces. That shouldn’t happen but overall great three points, move on and focus on the next one.

“Free-kick, corner kicks the pressure gets on. They had the quality. If you look at the traditional top six here last season there was only a couple that beat them It’s always a difficult place to come. I enjoy these type of atmospheres, so I was really looking forward to it but we could’ve made it easier if we don’t give them those set pieces, then you give them the boost and the feeling and the drive with the fans behind them but we managed to get the three points and move on.”

On Anthony Gordon’s red card challenge on him: “I said to him, if that’s not a sending off then I don’t understand football. It was strange the referee had to go to the monitor in my opinion. Unfortunately, these things happen in football, if he meant it or not it happened, we move on.”

Some v good performances tonight, and some really, really shoddy ones. We were poor on the ball — credit to Newcastle’s press, but we also didn’t make it easy for ourselves. We also looked v panicky defending set pieces (again).

Mentality monsters again, though. I still can’t quite believe we’ve won it. Not sure I can take 36 more matches with last min winners tbh… less drama v Arsenal please.

'Great goal for a 16-year-old’published at 22:35 British Summer Time

22:35 BST

FT: Newcastle 2-3 Liverpool

Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, speaking to Sky Sports: "I’m not too sure it was a football match today. It was set-piece after set-piece, long- throw after long-throw. We didn’t collapse and stood strong. We didn’t play well enough on the ball. I don’t think there was so much open play.

“It was a great goal for a 16-year-old. Rio [Ngumoha] can finish so well for his age. I did hear someway say afterwards in the dressing room he would have taken a first touch but he is so confident. For his age he is a really good finisher.”

His first match this season so …
He was trying the right things just not up to speed. He shouldn’t have been subbed on as Szoboszlai was doing a good job in defense then reverted to normal when he moved into midfield.

Virg was a 9 or 10. Konate 3 or 4

I tend to be a bit closer to median in my scores. VVD might deserve a point up actually, but I had their second goal in my head.

Ibou has had a rough couple weeks though defo. Head seems to be all over the place. No idea what’s going on.

Jones was up there tonight as well give him an 8!

Gakpo and Kerkez were poor 4!

He was good but not brilliant in my book. We lost the midfield battle.

Wirtz was a 3 at best.
He needs to toughen up.

I was reading somewhere a week or so ago that we’ve changed our marking system. I wonder if that is impacting our play?

This is it, for me.

We have the players to do special things this year (would take a few more, of course), but now it’s up to Arne to get a tune out of them.

Very confident he will.

That was due to Wirtz.

Nahh, it was a collective issue. He was okay on the ball, but again outmuscled.

I wouldn’t have played Wirtz from the beginning. Ideal sub after an hour for this shitfest.

Fair enough. I thought Virg and Dom were outstanding but some of the other performances probably helped them stand out

It’s hard when the team counters so poorly, plays doo many long balls and doesn’t even try to control the game. However surely that was decided and discussed before the game.
So nonsense game plan!
