What did you think of Szoboszlai’s performance?
Eleven versus ten, and letting go a 2-goal lead.
It seems that we couldn’t capitalise on the opposition having a man less.
I remember in recent years, we don’t do well when facing 10 bodies.
The other teams should look at purposely getting a red card when facing LFC, as a tactic, especially when trying to catch up.
Liverpool had two tellow cards in key ppositions after 25 minutes last night. Konate’s was stupid, 100% on him and Gravenberch probably deserved yellow. In that 25 minute period, Guimares, Joelinton and Burns committed yellow card offences.
Burns was booked around 40 minutes…
Gordon wouldn’t have launched himself like he did if he saw his teammates getting carded earlier, he would have been concious of what was happening. He was emboldened by Hoopers indecision.
The same situation regarding Richarlison on Thiago a few years back. Guimares was on a yellow when he clattered Chiesa. Twice. Red card all day, but Hooper bottled it.
I argued midweek that we focus, us supporters on our players getting injured. We think that certain teams will be more robust than others. I thought that we should handle this…
Well, heres the thing.
I was wrong about this one. Newcastle were fired up and intent on niggling fouls. Hooper was very slow and poor and let the crowd get to him. Zero protection leads to thuggery.
The SKY commentary last night was so fucking biased, I thought Liverpool were losing at 2-1. Sutton is a brutal commentator and Carragher looks like a fucking clown with his antics.
A good win in difficult circumstances with learning required. Ibou is a real concern. Kerkez will settle and Wirtz needs a few games. They will be fine. Really impressed with Szoboszlai last night. Did his job at RB, but the confidence and awareness with the dummy for the goal was immense. If Rio misses that we are all moaning about a senior pro bottling it. Great decision and great confidence in the kid.
As much as we feel they’re a bunch of scrubbers, NUFC unfortunately are not a bunch of scrubbers. Couple that with our significant squad changes, a handful of unfortunate injuries/absences, and some annoyingly out of form players, and in the cold light of day those 3 points feel even better.
“Liverpool were lucky!!! They were shite! They should have lost!!”
The braying deadshits have been saying that for years…
When does it stop being luck and start just being what it is we do?
Gordon apologises.
My intentions were pure…
Watching back the highlights and think that’s a really underrated goal from Ekitike. Picks the ball up on the half turn with not a lot on. Drives forward towards his support and shows good strength holding off the Newcastle player.
And then once he lays it off to Gakpo it’s just a fairly subtle movement into the space despite a Newcastle player trying to wrestle him and then the finish is calm and measured.
Been really impressed with the way he’s been finishing chances. There’s a calmness, a precision, a crispness to the shot. It’s night and day difference to what we were getting from Darwin.
There’s been an awful lot of talk around Isak but Hugo has slotted in very nicely already. It may only be two goals in two and we don’t want to get carried away but given Darwin got 5 league goals last season and Diogo just 6, it’s a very good sign to see him scoring already.
What a result to get in that context, and with that scenario playing out! Invaluable, really!
Many have already pointed out the negatives, so I’ll rather focus on the positives, which are many:
- we take three points at a notoriously difficult ground these days. Many teams will lose points there.
- Grav showing again what an important player he is for us. A lovely opening goal from him!
- Ekitike scores his third goal in three official matches. It’s official now: he has hit the ground running, and it’s great to see. A precise execution on that goal, he’s a killer. Exactly what we needed, in this somewhat wobbly beginning to the new season.
- Dom playing his heart out at a new position and really doing well overall.
- Rio, what can you say? This lad is worth his weight in gold. The way he enters the box on his goal, how he takes the finish, is breathtaking. Instead of chosing the open side of the goal (that’s what the goalie expects), he takes the small opening on the goalie’s left and crashes the ball in with his half-volley. As sweet an extra-time winner as we’ll ever see. What a goal! (The whole build-up is sweet as fuck as well.)
- Once again, our lads had it in themselves to come back into the game after a disappointing end to the game, and score the winner in the dying minutes. Long may that good habit last, although it would make everything much simpler if they didn’t concede silly goals in the first place!..
- Finally, one word on Gordon’s red card: I didn’t see it real-time, but having it watched again, it’s shocking. It’s clearly done with an intent to end VVD’s season. He can say what he wants, it’s as clear and transparent as crystal. This time though, the big man came away with it, and the perpetrator got sent off. Well done all involved in the decision. I’d wish for him to be suspended more time than just three games, as this was a voluntary attack on VVD’s health. He should serve ten games suspension imo, in order to make others think again before trying these kind of things.
All in all, we find ourselves with six points from two games after two very difficult fixtures. That’s more than we could have expected after all the upheavals of this summer. Hopefully Slot and co. will progressively find the answers to our remaining problems, especially in midfield and defence, and we’ll be able to improve from where we are now, fingers crossed!
No. AS said he couldnt complete training during the week and had to go inside. He’s hoping he’s fit for the Arse.
Long time lurker from TIA days…first time posting here ..Hope everyone is alright and apologies if you don’t like something in the post.
Having watched the whole match again this morning…
My Key takeaways
-
Kerkhez needs to be dropped For Arsenal. Shocking positioning for the first goal. And, kept on hoofing the ball all evening to lose possession. We need to get Robbo back and stabilise the defence again. And slowly integrate kerkhez.
-
Curtis was really poor in ball progression and really held back many attacks by lingering on the ball. He clearly sabotaged two chances where Wirtz was completely free in between the lines goal bound and curtis either never looked up or thought himself as Messi.
-
People need to understand that alot of our problems currently stem from the fact that our pressing from the front is not the way it used to be. The intensity of pressing is probably 50% from the front 3/4. We had demons like diogo/diaz or before bobby/mane who would hunt the defenders down in packs. That’s where we are lacking currently, and it will hopefully come with fitness and may be when players adjust fully to this league .
-
We need to have patience with Wirtz. If anyone re-watches that match, you can see how much space he was able to create for himself within the lines. Most of the times… our players didn’t look for him or he got crowded out.
- just couldn’t put 2 passes together even with an extra man. We kept on doing a gung-ho approach, trying a special pass and continuously lost the possession. Need someone like Xabi or senior with a cool head who could just keep the ball and take the sting out of the game.
Positives:
-Dom was immense and deffo motm
-Rio’s composure in that situation was outstanding
-Ekitike scored again
-Chiesa looking sharp and the subs like Harvey/Chiesa and Rio brought in the right type of energy.
-Grav is so important to this team.
- No major injuries coming out of that warzone built on a fake “Isak derby” narrative.
Lastly, a huge week for Hughes. We really need some attacking options from the bench and a defender. Rio did great but we shouldn’t be relying on a 16 year old to bail us out. Even if Isak comes, we are short of a winger. Gakpo looked completely gassed by 75min and Chiesa isn’t reliable in terms of injuries to provide cover along the entire frontline.
Malick Fofana please Richard !!!
Not bad Vanman. You’re definitely not the worst poster on here.
You should know
Yes William, I read your ‘contributions’ daily.
More the mug you
That’s the most astonishing thing for me. 3 of their players injured themselves trying to harm our players and a third is facing a 3 match ban for what looks like a deliberate attempt to end someone’s season.
Apparently, we have a guardian angel somewhere on the banks of the Tyne.
I’ve never been to Newcastle and I don’t think I ever will, as it appears to be full of fat, brain dead morons, who hate people from Liverpool.
I think you have confused Newcastle with the Internet.
I’m not on the social media platforms, so I haven’t read all that rubbish.
That kind of lazy stereotyping is a huge part of what’s wrong with this world. Newcastle is a proud port city with a glorious past and all the same challenges and opportunities as Liverpool. There are a mixture of good and bad just like any other place, but Scousers and Geordies have a lot in common.
His intentions were pure ….. evil. I was dead impressed with Virgil’s reaction after the tackle, I always knew we had the best CH in the world physically but he is a class player in every way as for the game he was imperious.
Well done mate that was pretty spot on welcome back.
