The ref might be privately thinking he gave it because he thought it was a free kick, and he wouldn’t have given it if it was definitely in the box.
But, as we learned against Brentford, once the ref has made the decision, unless it is a clear and obvious error, all VAR should be able to do then is rule factually on whether it was in or out of the box.
The ref effectively has two goes to get the decision he wants.

When the goalie closes the distance that quickly and to that degree at that point its down to luck not judgement if you can force it past him. I never understand the criticism of the finishing in those situations.
