Squad depth is being tested, but Gomez and Quansah are about as good as you can get as back up options, and Trent isn’t a bad one to bring back in! I didn’t know we were down to one left back though. I suspect we will just get on with it and not moan like Pep or Arteta.
There is a slight concern with Konate out, as Haaland will be doing his utmost to rough us up and get among the goals.
Knee injury sustained in training, it’s not actually been stated anywhere how severe it is. He wasn’t mentioned in the recent press conference either, so he could well be on the bench again today.
It’s fine margins whether or not Haaland will get any change out of our defenders. If I was him (I’m not that ugly, but he edges it as a footballer, now that I’m 53 years old ) I would stay away from VVD but try to engineer a duel with Gomez/Quansah.
Gomez is no shrinking violet, and again, he is as good as can be expected for a rotation option. Hopefully he handles Haaland if this is what he tries to do. With that said, Konate is just that little bit stronger and bigger (Gomez is fast as you like).
My main thing is I hope we play with the intensity we had against Real Madrid, with the crowd up for it too. A big Anfield occasion and a top performance could see us win well today, and that’s what we are all hoping for.
I think Ederson has dropped a level in the last year or so. Hammer of a left foot, but his all round goal keeping ability has slipped back a bit. No better than fourth best in the league, definitely after Alisson, Kelleher and Martinez.
