These rested more or less their whole starting 11 at the weekend which leads me to believe they fancy their chances, and quite frankly I wouldn’t blame them.
They’re no mugs as their win at Benfica testifies. It could be an interesting night.
Literally all they have to do is sit 5 at the back and 5 across midfield with one, maybe two guys in there that can run reasonably fast. We’ll walk around the park while somehow looking gassed and someone will eventually cock up north of the halfway line allowing them a free run on goal.
It was probably that time we played the 2014-15 version of quorum bag in that season’s CL? Their late equalizer that saw us likely drop out into the EL just saw me roll my eyes.
Basel, was it? Markovic getting sent off for a tickling someones face. This after tanking the Champions League and everyone (most including me) justifying it by saying we did what we needed to by getting to the final home game against inferior opposition and just needing a win.
Probably the easiest group we ever had
There is something almost comedic about the way some of you are so certain that if he doesn’t win (insert latest game) then he is definitely gone.
When does he “have” to go?
Is it when CL football is mathematically impossible?
I’m on the fence to be honest. I like loyalty, and I think he has points in the bag for last season. But the current situation is concerning, and sometimes the hard decision is the best one.
Yup, I don’t expect they will sack him, if he was to lose both games then they might bite the bullet if someone was ready to step in. But I can’t see them going with a short term option that isn’t here already.
I don’t think make decisions off the back or even a bad result, or even a run of bad results.
If you look at the last couple of managers they have bulleted.
-
Roy was always going to be sacked in the summer, but it was brought forward when the club was in the relegation zone and people stopped turning up for games.
-
Kenny was done post season in review.
-
Rodgers was moved on when they understood Klopp (who they wanted for years) was rested and ready to take over.
They do not sack managers on the basis of a result being ‘the last straw’.
I think the reasons why they would pull the trigger now are
-
Anfield properly turns. The crowd vocally turns on him, or just stops turning up at all.
-
The players indicate that they think continuing isn’t tenable.
-
Slot’s behaviour becomes a problem - he starts complaining about the recruitment, moaning about the players he wasn’t given, throwing blame on those above him.
Otherwise I think it’s end of the season.
The 4th reason is the availability of Xabi for a limited time.
No, there was an even worse team in our group that year that we dropped points to.
Just checked, it was the Bulgarians - Ludogorets. And yeah, even after that still had a shot of going through if we beat Basel, but we were shite even accounting for the absurd Markovic red
I’m sure that Arne and his team will know the personnel, tactics and formation to see us through this game. COYR YNWA

I agree nobody here knows when would be the moment Slot would potentially get sacked if we go on another bad run, but of course there is a limit how many games in a short space of time he could lose (and possibly lose CL spots even before the end of the season), regardless of Anfield, that could potentially still turn up and relatively support the team.
At one point in autumn it was looking dangerous if we didn’t stop losing games rapidly. I mean, he could’ve survived even that, but we have no idea.
We weren’t in the offices at the time.
We lost 5 of the last 8 league games under Hodgson when he got the sack. There’s always more than one reason when it happens (someone else could’ve survived those results), but yes, ultimately results are very high as a reason, if not highest. Anfield attendance dropped seriously in some Europa League games, but in the league I think the average was pretty much the same.
We lost 5 of the last 8 league games under Hodgson when he got the sack.
We were genuinely at risk of getting relegated.
We’ve also had a manager pick up just 12 points in 14 games under FSG’s ownership without them getting fired.
I think Kenny was done much earlier than that.
Guess what, I think he goes when Hughes and Edwards think he goes and will know what the bare minimum is.
Do you think its inevitable at end of season?
One (1) centre back available for this one. Congratulations to all involved.
Do you think its inevitable at end of season?
No, I don’t think it’s inevitable.
I think a recovery - rallying, seeing some improvement and cohesion in the team, and getting top 4/5 might keep him in the job. I think a strong end to the season could make an argument that we’ve had a bit of a perfect storm of shit going wrong, and the blame is spread across more people that Slot, and to some extent he’s had a shit hand to play.
The problem is that I don’t see any sign of that recovery, and Slot - from what we see of him in public - looks increasingly like someone who doesn’t really know how to fix this. This squad looks to me like something needs to change, and the easiest and most obvious thing to change is the Manager.
I know people don’t like to talk about Jota and grief, but I keep thinking back to that The Rest is Sport podcast where they interviewed a psychologist specialising in grief, who basically said the season would be a write off, but the first shoots of recovery would be seen in Jan/Feb.
For me, whatever happens, it’s not only the responsibility of Slot.
It is also his responsibility or of all the coaching staff, but it we know that transfer recruitment is not led by one person, then the people above have to be questioned as well. Of course they will remain and not lose their jobs, but even a potential new head coach candidate might look at this squad and say “how did they imagine this?”. He will almost surely not be able to continue that, but change a few things.
It’s fantastic that we were able to spend as much as we did last summer, naturally you wish your club is in a position to do it more often than not. Logic.
But then it needs to be done with sense and we ended that summer with more question marks than you’d like. These were not ordinary question marks, this was a bit more serious. It happens, we saw it many times in football. Part of our fanbase used to or sometimes laughs at others when they do it. This time it was us.
Still, yes, there is enough quality on paper not to have bigger damage than failing to remain a CL side and not to win a trophy.
