I donât think, in that situation the CB has too much control over the situation. Quansah had no cover from the other CB so his options are to engage or back off and wait for support.
In order to engage he needs a poor/heavy touch from the attacker, which never came, so heâs at the mercy of hisnsupporting defenders. Doesnât really matter how far he backs up in attempting to delay because he knows its unlikely to be him making the challenge - and losing this 1v1 duel gives the forward a clear run on goal.
The issue, in my opinion, is that Quansah plays it correctly but Morton comes to help and overruns it. He needs to shorten his steps quicker and approach more controlled in order to take away the inside cut and also to apply good pressure. Then not only did he fail to effectively support his CB but he then also blocked Quansahâs view which stopped him for reacting effectively.
So Mortonâs error in my book, just playing too fast and not smart.
